You’ll never change me, to be qualified you have indentures. No ifs, no buts.

Over the years I’ve had more than my fair share of newly qualified engineers straight from university. I wouldn’t trust them at all, no practical experience.

only for works you do....
obviously if you see something dangerous whilst there then you have a duty of care to inform the person/s ordering the work of what you have found.....then you could offer remedial or to disconnect...and i stress the word offer....caus you would be still going over your remit if you just started disconnection/carrying out remedial without permission
Spot on.

Not so if were talking about company sponsored Sandwich Degree Engineers, But you'd certainly be right about a straight from school to College Engineer...

Glenn, they would be sent out on plant with me so I could hold their hand and keep them out of trouble.
They would arrive full of theory of how it should work, real life doesn’t work like that.

That is it in a nutshell for me tony, they can't learn the trade stood in a sterile college booth with a nicely laid out test board in white conduit, because that is not what an electrician encounters on site, and for me that is the difference. They need to work under the supervision of a experienced time served guy for years before being unleashed in to the big bad world. and then they should make competent and capable electricians.

And how do they get that experience?

By being sent out with me! As the only approved trainer on shifts I copped out for all of them.

i did a company sponsored HND sandwich. 4 years. even then, my practical experience was pathetic, the company having used me for stupid things like casting insulators and winding transformers. basically a dogsbody. took several years of working with good guys to get enough experience to consider myself competent.

They are split time degrees courses Tony, the Students spend almost as much time with on the job training as they do on the academic college side!! ....And why a Sandwich Degree takes 4 years, and not the usual 3 years!!

I know, because that was the initial level 5 higher education route i was given by my company, and i might add, in my case only after i had completed all C&G's and other level 3 and 4 qualifications.
