Kiers1970

I know everyone has to start somewhere, but it grinds my gears reading some of these posts, asking for help on completely straight forward problems that some guys come up against.

Not being funny, bit if you are working for yourself, you should know what to do, no post on this forum.

Imagine this scenario...

I know the lights arent working now Mr, Mrs. Doctor, Lord, Sir, etc, I'll search for a solution on the 'net tonight. Oh, and can you have payment ready for me tomorrow? .... hey do you have wifi, I'll bring my laptop..

AIM;383052 And finally the mate down the pub said:
This will only happen when we as the true professionals actually start shopping people in to trading standards and the HSE. Another is probably the insurance industry. BUT - as others have said before on other threads (and I have agreed), we as the blokes on the street shouldn't be the electrical police.

So something's gotta give somewhere!!! My thoughts are that it's crazy that you walk into the big orange shed and see signs posted everywhere telling you about how they won't sell you a knife or a pot of glue, but that same fifteen year old could quite happily rewire his mums house and then watch it burn to the ground a fortnight later.

Like you say, it will take some major disaster with a huge amount of publicity to initiate a real culture change in this country. Er....isn't that how Part P came about?

Interesting thread...I have in the past had occasion to 'bite' some posters on this forum.....there was one I recall where the OP's first line was..."I am a fully qualified electrician.....",he then went on to enquire as to the best way to wire a few downlights!...I bit I am afraid.
These days I try and avoid these posts,or at least keep my fingers away from the keypad.

Fact is we all have to learn, and nobody knows everything....But PLEASE...,dont come on here spouting about your qualifications and experience....and then ask a really basic question, admitting your limitations is more likely to get a helpful response from the regulars on here.

sadly though , now that's not the case. cheap labour, yes. training to be a good
spark.., rare.

the training you get as an apprentice comes from your enthusiam to learn and your ability to observe your mentor and doing what inevitably you will one day end up doing yourself, you will learn nothing from fiddling with your god dam blackberry/iphone whilst standing at the bottom of a pair of steps!!!!!!!!!!!!

My shiny iPhone gets put in the tool bag and left there til lunch :) I always want to know why and how and I'm not one to always look at the clock waiting til home time.
Can I have a shiny big gold star please 

I was discussing this at work the other day...not too long ago you would research with text books and go to the library in order to get the answers to simple questions, however now you can google just about everything. I dread to think the many hours I have spent doing "homework" by researching this site and others like it to solve what would be embarrising simple problems to a lot of the chaps on here. Personally it gives me a bit of confidence when I see others doing the same

I`v noticed a lot of threads/posts on here though that always tend to start with the inevitable words "just doing a bit of work for someone" or "fitting some pendants for a family member" then they procede to ask about how to wire 3 plate or the best way to sink a box etc or some other silly nonsense like that.....It just makes me think..you have no buisiness installing if you cant get your head around very basic stuff like that..........

have me old man on speed dial most days. 40years in the game not much gets by him.

if youre not sure, you should enquire and clarify... but its quite shocking when you go to a property what has "been certified but no paperwork?? to find whoever was there last didn't believe in earth sleeving... utltities earthing ..oh.. there was not even a Earth link in the cutout !!!

the utilities were there within the hour. who on earth clarifies a job complete in this conditon!! the customer new no wiser till that day. the utilities didnt know and clearly the cowboy who worked there last knew no wiser. prat.

never said I know it all, and i'm not mocking, I'm simply saying that if you are offering your services as an electrician, with all the responsibility it carries, you should be able to do what is required, simple fault finding etc, using your test equipment and brain etc. and If you want paying for the privilege of it too, a poist on a forum asking how to repair a simple lighting circuit isn't in my view acceptable!
would you pay for someone to visit your house, put some lights up and leave with out half the rest of the houses lights off? I'd be well peeved to have thought I'd even let them in the house!!!

Kiers1970...totally respect what you are saying ....but theres nowt you can do about it, and posting "don't post" won't work either. Hopefully a problem shared will help though.

The point has been mentioned, this is a forum, there is no rule about asking silly questions I'm afraid. You must learn to live with it my friend, and I humbly offer that as telextrix has said, you never know everything even after decades (which I ain't got either).

me personally, i always say there no such thing as a silly Q you rather know it or you don't simples.
also i think theres no need to get wound up over other people post, being a sparky is stressful as it is
i thought this forum was about sharing each others experiences and helping each other out the minute i start getting wound up over other people Q or post i'll stop coming on here, its bad enough trying to make ends meat without worrying myself even more:ciappa:

I agree with the original post. Some of these posts are first year apprentice stuff and all these bits of paper ain't gonna make u a spark.ever.the problem lies in this governments bid to get the rates down by introducing at last estimate 100k people retrained as sparks/plumbers. 100k trainees requires 100k people with the relavent experience to teach them properly.this forum is a good source of info and I do know that everybody has a different level of ability if you don't know you don't know.is this not a reason for some government set up to actually make it worth your while to take on apprentices instead of shafting guys who think there is £££ to make by being a spark with cack courses?
