Am I the only one? I'm stick to death of coming on here and getting told the best electricians are career changers because they paid for it themselves. 16-21 year olds are no good because they have a life outside work. This scheme worked for nearly 100 years but now it can't why? All the 6 week wonders, taxi drivers and the rest of the M.U.M'S (made up mates) can bore me with your reasons.

well i think you will find it has been the opposite on here of recent. the guys who have come through from career changes have been at times blasted for taking the quicker option.

i will give my opinion for what its worth on electricians coming into the trade from any walk of life.

the good old "Job For Life" unfortunately has all but gone. this is due to many things over the years and thus led to people not only wanting to but also needing to change career.

the best electricians in my book have no age boundaries either way. if you are passionate and want to learn and also do a good job you will turn out well regardless of age and sexuality. i have had the pleasure of working with guys and girls of all ages and all different ways into the trade.

some younger ones and also elder ones have qualities and also draw backs but everyone of them is an individual and should be judged by their own merits and not stereotyped. that`s to say not all the younger ones are bone idle and not all the elder ones are stuck in their ways.

I actually feel for the 6 week ones that have found the only way to get into the trade is to shell out a shed load of money and are keen to learn and a lot of the time only to find the grass without the good fortune of getting a start have spent a great deal of time and also money to get their qualification.

i also feel for the apprentice who take at times a great deal of grief and do all the crappy jobs.

in the ideal world their would be a good way for the adult to undertake a full apprentership and be giving the experience we all need to get along out there.

there has been a lot of talk about JIB gold card holders of late as well and tbh I can`t see why it matters how we come into the trade. its what we do when we come in that matters not how we got here.

for me it was a long hard slog getting in but i tell you what it was one of my proudest days to say i was an "Electrician"

lets not go down the usual route on this one of blasting each other where one guy has done the fast track one has served his time and the other has got the JIB gold card.

please bear in mind that we are all on this forum for the great place it has become i know there has been a great deal of hard work put in on here and lets not spoil it with arguments or
insults

"Am I the only one?" Looks like it.

"I'm stick to death of coming on here and getting told the best electricians are career changers because they paid for it themselves." I haven't seen anyone say that.

"16-21 year olds are no good because they have a life outside work." That will change with marriage, mortgage and kids but good on em for starting out whilst their young.

"This scheme worked for nearly 100 years but now it can't why?" H&S costing more, insurance premiums for employers, no company can give a 4 year grantee, a lot of school leavers can earn more in a factory than an apprenticeship so they can buy all the trendy clothes and mobiles.

"All the 6 week wonders, taxi drivers" What's wrong with anybody from another background trying to better themselves?

"and the rest of the M.U.M'S (made up mates) can bore me with your reasons." Sorry I'm only 3 weeks in on my 6 weeks course and if it is not multiple choice I can't answer.

so what about me!!

i did a Engineering Apprenticeship with the royal navy in Mechanics and Electrics and was a Nuclear system operator / maintainer

i never touched BS7671 until 2008 when i did my 17th...... i never had a single electrical qual to my name until i did 17th but now i hold all relevant ones to the job and am also undergoing HV Training...

time served spark NOPE!! Electrical Mate?? NOPE!! 5 week Wonder?? NOPE!!

where do i fit in??? do i bore you???

hi mate no one is saying all apprentices are this and no one thinks that all adult trainees or career changers are the ultimate sparky

i for one have done both
25yrs ago i was the new apprentice who got all the rough end of the stick thats why i gave it up as i felt i was getting nowhere even though it was the only job i wanted to do

and then after 25 years of being involved it electrical installation since my apprenticeship as well as other jobs that were a lot worse than my apprenticeship i tried many times to get another apprenticeship or similar , training ,jobs basically every way i could to keep getting back into the industry and after my partner and i had to give up work due to her becoming disabled and me becoming her full time carer for ÂŁ53 a week
I decided again that this was my last chance to get qualifications at 40yr old to do the job i have only ever wanted to do
so after basically begging the jobcentre for help, training, funding, jobs , self employment
we pay privatley ÂŁ4020 to get some basic quals no i dont have 2330 not through lack of trying to get
a course for it but through it ending and all the local colleges being full
i pay again privatley ÂŁ540 for 2391 study every day for 12 hrs at least for 4 months and 8 weeks evenings at college not local to me I pass first time only 1 of 4 who did out of the 10 of us that took it and i was the only one not working in the industry and only 39% of the country passed and i was one and as well as being a carer, dog walker a father to two daughters and believe me at 16 and 18 theyre enough to deal with

next is to enrol with elecsa ,enrol for nvq, set up self employed with no help from the government or benefit agencies as according to them i am not classed as unemployed due to being a non proffessional full time carer and exempt from work or looking for work that there is no help what so ever for people like My mrs and i

so mate you see its not just you or me its the industry , the government, and most of all its the ones who dont want to do the job right in the first place

only you know if your good at what you do mate no matter what anyone tells ya

Durham I only said it to wind you up , I saw it on CSI last week.

i know...!!! you sure it was not NCIS you were watching rather than CSI???

and actually yes i did make the chicken dipper a few mugs of tea!! he was most welcome in the engine room at periods of quiet times!! but to make up for it i used to charge his mess bill with chocolate and sweets!! :) hey it was a honesty system where you ticked off what you bought from the canteen (or in our case on a sub a bucket full of sweets and choccy!) i was fully honest what i bought just not honest who got charged for it!!
