Am I the only one? I'm stick to death of coming on here and getting told the best electricians are career changers because they paid for it themselves. 16-21 year olds are no good because they have a life outside work. This scheme worked for nearly 100 years but now it can't why? All the 6 week wonders, taxi drivers and the rest of the M.U.M'S (made up mates) can bore me with your reasons.
I can't say I'm sure where you got that from...........
The simple fact is the "best" electricians are those who do the job properly, with safety in mind, as well as what their customer wants.
There is no "best" route to becoming an electrician - the point, I think is that most of us who have been in the game for considerable time (26yrs+) in my case - have gone far enough to see the benefits of having had a proper "apprenticeship" - that is, being SHOWN how to do things, as well as sitting in a classroom learning about regulations and theory.
What most of us cannot understand is how that can be compressed into a six week course, whoever pays for it.
In common with most here, I guess it is easy to understand how six weeks intensive learning can teach the bulk of the regulations in THEORY - but again, most of us who went the "old" route worry because there is a world of difference between theory, and putting things into practice in a safe, and professional way.
Being an electrician is not simply about knowing that the brown wire hurts more than the others can. It involves aspects of so many other trades too - such as knowing whether it is safe to run a cable through joists, or within walls. It involves elements of carpentry, building, plumbing (yeah, really), and so on - and all that within a fairly rigid set of rules.
Those are all things that no six week course can teach. But - six week course types also probably have advantages over us old timers too in some ways. For one thing, most of them are more willing to pull out the BRB or OSG, and they are probably often more willing to challenge themselves on the best ways of doing a thing - with time, we all tend to relax into feeling we know best.
Personally, my preference is for a return to old type apprenticeships - with proper education of theory too - but then, I'd have more chance of seeing Mickey Mouse elected to run the country I think
