Am I the only one? I'm stick to death of coming on here and getting told the best electricians are career changers because they paid for it themselves. 16-21 year olds are no good because they have a life outside work. This scheme worked for nearly 100 years but now it can't why? All the 6 week wonders, taxi drivers and the rest of the M.U.M'S (made up mates) can bore me with your reasons.

a good electrician in my opinion is someone who is good at not only installing but understanding how that system works. Electricians come from all walks off life be time served or career changers. What about career changers who have got say 10 years experience? I'm working with a bloke from a domestic background who seems to know his stuff but it took him half a day to put one piece of galv tube up then decided to take it down cos he couldn't get it level! Some electricians may be the best there is at house bashing and some may be amazing metal munchers! I also think that a decent electrician would always be in work even in the current climate that were in.

well i think you will find it has been the opposite on here of recent. the guys who have come through from career changes have been at times blasted for taking the quicker option.

i will give my opinion for what its worth on electricians coming into the trade from any walk of life.

the good old "Job For Life" unfortunately has all but gone. this is due to many things over the years and thus led to people not only wanting to but also needing to change career.

the best electricians in my book have no age boundaries either way. if you are passionate and want to learn and also do a good job you will turn out well regardless of age and sexuality. i have had the pleasure of working with guys and girls of all ages and all different ways into the trade.

some younger ones and also elder ones have qualities and also draw backs but everyone of them is an individual and should be judged by their own merits and not stereotyped. that`s to say not all the younger ones are bone idle and not all the elder ones are stuck in their ways.

I actually feel for the 6 week ones that have found the only way to get into the trade is to shell out a shed load of money and are keen to learn and a lot of the time only to find the grass without the good fortune of getting a start have spent a great deal of time and also money to get their qualification.

i also feel for the apprentice who take at times a great deal of grief and do all the crappy jobs.

in the ideal world their would be a good way for the adult to undertake a full apprentership and be giving the experience we all need to get along out there.

there has been a lot of talk about JIB gold card holders of late as well and tbh I can`t see why it matters how we come into the trade. its what we do when we come in that matters not how we got here.

for me it was a long hard slog getting in but i tell you what it was one of my proudest days to say i was an "Electrician"

lets not go down the usual route on this one of blasting each other where one guy has done the fast track one has served his time and the other has got the JIB gold card.

please bear in mind that we are all on this forum for the great place it has become i know there has been a great deal of hard work put in on here and lets not spoil it with arguments or
insults

very well said.

Surely the 2391 is a good marker

Id love to agree with you mate, but it is not the case.

Ive got the 2391 written (practical next Tuesday). But I haven't worked big time in electrical installation for over ten years (ive been playing in the mud). However, I did train, and, work as an electrician for 13 years from school.

Examinations don't equal experience.

Ten years of being out of the game leaves me unexperienced to an extent (even if i do understand GN3).

I think experience scores the points.

I myself did not have a chance as to serve an apprenticeship as was full time working paying rent bills etc so like a lot of people had to do a 3 year evening course 2360 pt1 & 2,16th edition(at the time),2391,coming home 3 nights a week at 10pm doing coursework when i at weekends that was a tough 3 years but worth it in the end.Having said that when i had all the quals and asked for a payrise i got treated like a **** and for good reason because i still didnt know my arse from my elbow,i thought to myself why did i bother, people are only ever going to treat me like an apprentice, but with time and experience it changes,if someone has skill then to some extent they can learn and be competent at certain electrical works, the industry is so vast, that as unfortunate as it may be the apprenticeships are getting fewer, the fastrack route will more than likely be peoples only way to earn a good living,so we need to give them a break and just encourage them do a great job whatever work they do,as much as it may pain some on the forum who spent five years+ doing there apprenticeships(and i would have liked to have done it that way),for many they do not have the option, what else can they do.

I didn't say that people who can't bend tube are bad electricians, I'm saying that some electricians are good at one type of work and other people better at other things! why do people always take offence on here!

bruce lee nearly same as me,undicided when 16 took electronics then electrical 2360-1 then a few years working electrical no work so did electronics repair technician a few years then a bad relationship for years then i woke up and back to college 2007 2360-2,2391 working here and on ships 2382-10 next nvq3.
ime 36 now so am i a career changer, just cause ime not recognised by jib? i am glad i have 2360 at my age because of the stigma that seems to be around these new courses.
i have mostly worked comercial industrial building enjoy tray, conduit, basket etc but as jib stopping my full cards have had to work under a 'mates' umbrella in this country and as had my first child last year have taken time out but need work here for a while so need propper jib,

Im on the 10th March exam too .im doing the practical refresher tomorrow but not doing the practical Exam till the 23rd as I want to concentrate soley on the written Exam first.(Although I've read through GN3 a few times it still doesn't feel like it's sinking in) .

it will be. all of a sudden you will just click and it will all be there. have you had a go at answering any past papers yet? they are a good way of finding out what you don`t know. also if you pop the question up in a thread on here with what you think is the answer somone will be along to tell you if its right or not. good luck with the exam :)

yer i've had a go and gave myself a 65% = 98 mark pass rate to aim for which I got 108 marks on my first paper but only got 94 on the 2nd I haven't had chance to do the 3rd?4th papers cause i've been busy with work.

But were some people on the course are answering the Past papers while reading through GN3 I don't I read through a section or 2 sections of GN3 every other day to try and let it sink in then attempt a past paper on Sundays withouht refering to GN3 to see if i've remembered anything and I get stuck on some fairly easy questions . Im fairly confident on Correct terminologies it's just that some of my answers while might be correct in another exam they are not answered like 2391 answers if you catch my drift.

What I was gonna do was post the questions from the 2 past papers I got left and also the answers i've put down and ask some of you guys to mark them or point out were im going wrong :p
