GLENNSPARK

hi, i`m an electrician....
i have just completed a month course at the building skills for life initiative centre near where i live. I have just got my 17th through them and have been credited with the BSL certificate of competancy award. Does this mean i can now go round doing houses as this is what i was told by the centre. I have heard something about part P but i am not sure as they did not mention that i needed this qualification. Is this true? if i needed to be part P qualified then i may have been better just doing that rather than go through all that months studies.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.;)

to clear up the confusion, the earth path is the trodden down path of soil through the veggie patch to reg's shed. now reg wrote a book many years ago it was called "the regs book". reg has made so much wonga from sales of his book he's bought a MCB ( Motor Cruising Boat ) and now sails on the oceans seeking out the plug to drain some of the water away.

Glenn just letting you know if there's anything in the industrial side you want to know then just ask.
The main problem with three phase is that there's often up to five wires in an installation, but its ok just remember that three of them are live and one is earth and one is neutral, although sometimes you don't need a neutral and sometimes your earth is in the outside cable already, but I'm rushing things now, there'll be another course for three phase I'm sure then you can do factories as well as houses.

Problem with industrial control is that to most of the production operators you work with your not a real spark, most of their boys are "real sparks who do houses as well, they did a course off the dole see,and it only took them 5 weeks, not four years like us thickos" (genuinely got told that before).

if you decide to get into industrial mate,I know I'm rushing a bit as that's gonna be 3/4 weeks down the line, you can get into plc's as well or a "computer course".

for about another ÂŁ3000 on what you've already spent you can then learn all about obsolete systems that are used in "all the top manufacturing industries" so then you can become a computer programmer and offer your services to all the big firms out there who can't get any of us thickos to use it,it's just like play station but with less things to do e.g you won't be saving any princesses or blowing up tanks (unless your working in a tank factory).

after a while if you want the money and time off to do houses/factories/plc programming in your time off you can just "get on the rigs then".

youll just need to do one more course then called "compex" but don't panic,it's only a grand, and that exceeds any other form of electrical qualification you may have,onc/ond/hnc/hnd/degree/masters forget all them as once you have compex you suddenly join an elite club of electricians so high up on the electrical plane that generally you'd think these guys were around when electricity was discovered.
you then get into a position where you can constantly talk down to anyone who hasn't done this qualification and not show them anything to do with it as we all know the first rule of compex club is,we don't talk about compex.

theres a great career path mapped out for you mate,I've heard some of these boys doing houses are taking home ÂŁ5000 a week, you've only got to look at the job section here to see how much works out there, plus you'll pay your ÂŁ10000 start up costs back in 2 weeks easy.

good luck mate,stick at it.

Hi Glenn and welcome to the sparky gravy-train. My best advice will be not to be downhearted that you'll have to struggle along on the basic ÂŁ50,000 a year for a few months, until you can get on the advanced two-week course, the you can set out on your own and the loot will really start rolling in.

Oh yes, and don't get hung up on all this confusing and unnecessary testing and earth wires the dinosaurs drone on about, now we have RCD's protecting everything they do the job of finding any faults. The only test kit you need is your neon screwdriver you were given free with your course, and a bulb on a bit of flex.

Enjoy your new career!

love

Stropps.

Another string to your bow can be PAT testing Glenn, its only a day course plus about another grand for the machine but you can charge ÂŁ2.50 an item to test.
if you think the average house has about 50 appliances to test you get another ÂŁ125 a house, because obviously every place you go will want this.

You only have to do ten houses and that's your money back plus you'll be making ÂŁ5000 clear per house anyway.

you can then get your cousin who works in currys stores to fix them for you as he can do electronics, corner the market so to speak.

starting to think working offshore was a bad move,I could be earning big ÂŁÂŁÂŁ doing houses.

oh flip I haven't got my part p's.

never mind.

Electrical Trainee!!

Guys just to put some of you right about Electrical Trainee to become a sparks.

Your completely wrong!!!

It doesn't take 5 weeks it can be done in far less!! An example!!

1. A Part P course 5 days.
2. 17th edition 3-4 days
3. Electrical testing say 2392 4 days

Total @ 13-14 days.

The above with 2 projects will let someone get Full scope with say the NICEIC and register as a DI.

So 5 weeks totally overqualified for the job unless they are studying as well the far harder subject of plumbing which as we know earns more!!!

Experience well if they're still alive after working following such a short course they must have learnt some life skills.

What comes with experience well gout, a failing memory and the need for increased trips to the toilet. That and a fetish for tools!

Life eh who said it was ever fair!

Now I've depressed myself. Off to take my mogodon and ignore the Mrs for a couple of hours (well it passes the time).
