I'm with Andy, definitely feed to switch, especially when the the room's got a thousand downlighters, much quicker. Having said that if it's a rewire with one pendant per room, 3 plate, as the tube to the switch is usually too tight for feed in, feed out, switch 1, switch 2, and a 3-core for the 2-way on the second switch !!
100% agree

After spending today chopping out chases - I will never EVER put a larger box in to loop in at the switch. In fact I have never heard of this method before now and don't know why anybody would. 'It is safer because it reduces the need for steps'. I'm sorry but if you haven't mastered 'stairs' and 'looking up' by age three you have no hope.

I heard you the first time,

1, no one puts larger boxes in. Maybe deeper, but I now do that even for 3 plate in case a dimmer is required.
2, My post doesn't mention safety once, just ease or easier. Now you could argue that it's easier to do a joint up a step ladder with the terminations above your head than standing on the floor working with the joint in front of you. I know what I prefer.

I've been doing rewires for about 20 years and always used 3 plate or jb method. However , for the past 5 years i have converted to the loop in @ the switches method as (a) you usually use less cable , (b) much easier to 2nd fix decorative lights (no snotty connections), (c) less clipping in loft (upstairs lighting circuit), (d) quicker all round ! Another note - i always install 25mm back boxes or deeper just in case customer wants dimmers in future, thus meaning more room for all cables and less chance of pressure faults .Hope this converts some of you guys as it will make replacing light fittings easier in the future. (it took me years to adapt myself).

feeds at the switch. its not even a debate. why wolud you want to be fiddling about at the rose with all them cables? certain sparks think its the pro way to do it, but its not. as someone mentioned its so much easier to swap light fittings in the fututre, although what matey said about doing it the hard way so we get more call outs is a good shout as well !

The Problem with switch method is that in a house all the feeds will be at the switch and if you need to pick up a feed for the fan etc it will make it hard work.

I use 3 plate 95% and switch 5%

Also is you get called to a house to install a smoke detector and there is no feed at the light it can cause a lot of work

We're talking about a new installation or rewire, fans and smoke detectors are wired at the time.

I tend to use a mixture of both methods with no real preference to either, just which ever lends itself best to a particular situation.

I agree with that plus sometimes with a rewire a joint box method is easier, although I prefer looping through the switch boxes.

I take a jazz approach to electrics. Some days I might three plate at the rose, others I might stuff it all behind the switch. 'Cos that's the way I roll man.

Lol! I like it!

It´s a bit like driving up and down the same piece of motorway every day....or sometimes, live a little, and take the A road!

Just that ive been to look at work and had a shock when i went to wire a loft light and there was no feed at the lights .and all switches on 1st floor had been chased up from floor , so there wasnt even a cable in the loft that i could cut into ,, ONE BIG DRAW BACK

Never been Keen on joint boxes on new rewires

We use a mixture depending on what is easiest for each light. Usually it is 3 plate at the ceiling rose. But On my last rewire I took the feed down to 2 of the sw's just for the outside lights, and then a 3 core outside.

If the client wants dimmers at the sw the minimum I would want is 35mm box even 45mm if there is 2 way sw in there for 2 or more lights. With all the neutrals and earths it can get a bit busy in there, and easy to crush cables with the possibility of snapping a conductor when trying to wrestle a flat plate dimmer back in!!

When terminating the bathroom cables in the loft, the way to go is to use a ashley box. It is easy to terminate in and means you can have a single cable to the light fitting. keeping it all tidy for the fan and iso to.
