hi avery one done full house rewire including low voltage fan in a shower cubicle 2years ago,the owner rang me saying some 1 told him that the fan is danger and should not be there.please help

230V and 12V fans are both allowed in zone one as long as they comply with IPX4 or IPX5 if prone to water jets. Tell the customer to write down this number; 701.55, and then tell the customer to pass that number on to the clown that is telling them otherwise!

That does make sense Mr DS but the cheaper manrose fans (230V) clearly say IPx4 but then go on to say do not fit in the shower cubicle (zone 1), so we cant always fit IPx4 in zone 1 (which seems a bit silly, but the regs do say we have to follow the maufacturers instructions - as Murdoch has rammed into me a few times :smile5:)

that's probably a case of manufacturers covering themselves in case their IP rating is not up to standard and something goes wrong then they can say that they advised not to fit in zone 1.

Yes you're quite right, within reason if the instructions say not to do something then don't. It's the first I've heard of such an instruction but then I don't fit cheapo Manrose fans :D

I guess that they're saying that, as a shower cubicle may experience 'water jets' from the shower, it's not suitable for that location, whereas Zone 1 over a bath with no shower attachment would be OK.

Not sure about the "rammed" bit - just an observation that seemingly very few people actually read the instructions in the box and prefer to start threads on here!

NOT TO WORRY BEEN IN THIS MORNING WITH MY 4INCH CUTTER ,MOVED THE FAN OUT THE SHOWER CUBICLE JOB IS DONE , thanks again to GEORDIE SPARK for his nice and lovely comments ,

I wouldn't dare argue the point with you fella, I agree, but the regs say if Jets can hit it, then it must be IPx7, I am only quoting what is written.

IPX5 protects from low pressure water jets from all directions mate. A shower is low pressure, therefore, IPX4 in a shower cubicle or IPX5 if it's gonna get sprayed by the shower :)

No, the regs say that 'equipment shall be selected and erected so as to allow compliance with ... BS7671 and shall take account of manufacturers' instructions.' (510.3)

ie, you don't have to follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. For example, I might decide that a 6A BS EN 60898 MCB gives adequate overcurrent protection, as an alternative to the specified '3A fuse'.
