Appendix 15

An unfused spur may be connected to the origin of the circuit in the distribution board.
An unfused spur should feed one single or one twin socket outlet only.

I know it's allowed in the regs .... it should be removed IMHO. I prefer the FCU approach for spurs.

I assumed you thought it wasn't by this:
Because IMO it's not. There are lots of things in the regs that I disagree with, I'll write a book when I retire :)

The 2.5mm cable (if completely derated for installation method) is not adequate for a spur feeding a (single) double socket.

twin socket - 26 A
2.5 mm cable = 27 A
seems fine to me
for what its worth i dont like RFC full stop but they have there purpose and place

Installation methods would need to be considered, I agree with that though most would fall into method C for domestic thus 27A rated 2.5mm t&e.
Minitrunking for that crappy installed extra socket could cause issues though.

An unfused spur from the origin or just unfused spurs in general?
For me unfused (or undersized) spurs in general. Radial circuits correctly fused are fine in my world though.

I particularly don't like them because of the ease with which the cable can be overloaded. With the RFC it's difficult to achieve before the CPD cuts in, with an unfused spur not so hard.

Poorly designed rings can be just as bad. Leave a CU straight to kitchen, supply a number of heavily rated appliances then around the rest of the ground floor before returning. The short leg to the kitchen is going take take some punishment.

A B32 MCB can take 50A for 16mins, 40A for over 2.5hrs!

Agreed, but that you'd take into account when designing (or should). Whereas spurs are bodge fixes that should not be allowed. Use an FCU and fuse it accordingly (or use 4mm radials everywhere).

Think we may have gone a wee bit off topic now, but a useful debate.

code 1 for the exposed live terminals at the top (1st picture) although switch is in off position these terminals are still live. should have plastic shields.
