Client wants (indoor, domestic) socket moved a matter of a few feet, assuming cable is not to be buried in wall, would you say for regs compliance socket must be RCD protected? I know the answer is liable to be yes because it's adding a new socket and decommissioning the old, but just wanted to pick some more experienced brains. I'm aware if the cable isn't buried I could just install a socket with integral RCD if the client is willing. Realistically they may go for the cowboy installer who'll just move the socket and not even worry about RCDs.

I'd like an example of that....for someone qualified moving a socket 24''.

Can't give you one. (Can't give you an example of anyone hurting themselves juggling meatcleavers either; still wouldn't recommend it.) But if something bad happened as a result you can see how a prosecution case might have legs, have a look at the gross negligence manslaughter or unlawful act manslaughter definitions above if you care.

There is an easy solution to this disagreement. Why dont we all phone are respective part P schemes technical helplines and see what their advice is. This way we have an independant opinion.

Yeah, they could be talking to a Electrical Trainee...got to cover their backs.

Mr Skelton, phone your technical helpline and see what they say, its not difficult to do. If they say you are ok then you are ok and right, if they say it is not ok, then concede you are wrong. Argument over!

The 'be all and end all', eh?

Tony and Crony'll sort it

As I said, run and run.

Here is the solution: ask the client what they will plug into the socket and then put a label on it saying that it is only to be used for this particular appliance. Problem solved :) .

And no it didn't take me two weeks to find that out, just two weeks to get round to posting it!

On a more serious note, this is neither an alteration nor an addition. It is minor work. An addition is adding a whole new circuit, an alteration is replacing a consumer unit, upgrading bonding and such like.
