Client wants (indoor, domestic) socket moved a matter of a few feet, assuming cable is not to be buried in wall, would you say for regs compliance socket must be RCD protected? I know the answer is liable to be yes because it's adding a new socket and decommissioning the old, but just wanted to pick some more experienced brains. I'm aware if the cable isn't buried I could just install a socket with integral RCD if the client is willing. Realistically they may go for the cowboy installer who'll just move the socket and not even worry about RCDs.

As I said, run and run.

Here is the solution: ask the client what they will plug into the socket and then put a label on it saying that it is only to be used for this particular appliance. Problem solved :) .

And no it didn't take me two weeks to find that out, just two weeks to get round to posting it!

On a more serious note, this is neither an alteration nor an addition. It is minor work. An addition is adding a whole new circuit, an alteration is replacing a consumer unit, upgrading bonding and such like.

Please give reference to where you get your version of an alteration and addition with regards to an electrical installation, I'm intrigued. Minor works is a cover note that includes alterations and additions... adding an extra light by looping off an adjacent one is a minor works but still classed as an addition to the circuit. The rerouting of circuit wiring may be classed as an alteration and in both cases you have to ensure the work you do complies to current regulations which may mean the whole circuit may end up been brought up to the 17th if its the easiest way to ensure your work complies.

Beats me why we don't have subtractions, too. That would get 'em guessing.:juggle:

Woops! I was wrong! I thought the MWC did not use the words 'addition' and 'alteration', but re-reading it, it does. You doubtless could have told me that! As you say, all work does of course have to comply.
