Am I right in thinking that I can carry out a eicr on an old rewireable fuseboard? No install so technically I don't need RCD protection on anything...? I'd prefer to change it to a 17th edition board but customer wants to keep costs at an all time low.
Any thoughts welcome.
Chris

This is one of those it is it isn't cases.

for clear guidance here's a quote from the guidance.

The results of the inspection and testing need to be clearly detailed in a report. Any observed damage, deterioration, defects, dangerous conditions and non-compliances with the requirements of the current edition of BS 7671 that may give rise to danger should be recorded and appropriately classified for remedial action.
It should be borne in mind that, as stated in the introduction to BS 7671, existing installations that have been constructed in accordance with earlier editions of the Standard may not comply with the current edition in every respect, but this does not necessarily mean that they are unsafe for continued use or require upgrading.

see clear as can be, depending on what you find.

if your doing the report and some half wit has flung a lead out of the window and plugged a jet washer into it them there's concern.
if on the other hand it's some old lady in a ground floor flat with no garden, car etc then no concern.
as for rcd leads what if the numpy doesn't use one.

come on shoot me down.
pps I wouldn't suggest a new CU

So if a boy racer took his 1960 car with out a seatbelt fitted for a MOT it would fail, but if a 89 year old took who went no faster than 20 mph on her way to the shops took exactly the same car for a MOT it would pass?

but you had it down as a 2 at #16....so you cant back out now....
or perhaps you dont understand the concept?....

Found it.
this is the quote I remember being told on the amendments coarse

The observations should be based on the requirements of the edition of BS 7671 current at the time of the inspection, not on the requirements of an earlier edition current at the time the installation was constructed.

As its an observation that there's no rcd protection and the owner is cleaning with jet washer (just an example) then you can only refer to current regs.

but I do admit it is on personnel perspectives.

Chris you are a professional electrician charged with advising the ill informed cost cutting dick heads that customers usually are - I mean people who lack the knowledge to make proper decisions. A rewireable fuseboard - what 40 years old ? why bother carrying out an EICR a visual inspection of something that old is going to produce reams of reasons to replace the system - tell the tight so and so to stop sitting on his wallet and do the job right - but diplomatically !! Only my opinion and i'm usually in hot water lol
