Could start a Thread ! Show us your old meters ! im well into old meters ! the mrs hates them lol she said im like nicholas lyndhurst in goodnight sweetheart ! going back in time lol will have to get them out and put up some pics of my collection ! got most from carboot sales max was about £10 i think

I have a collection of testers from days gone buy, I don't collect them as such but I look after my test equipment and just don't throw them away even when I buy newer or better stuff. I'll take some pictures next time I'm in the workshop.

That would be good to see, like you I don't as such collect them. I have bought them to use over the years & have kept them safe. I restore vintage radios as a hobby so all the Analogue meters still get used regularly. I still take an Analogue out on site as well as the Digi, Never know when you'll need it.

Slightly off topic but sort of related via ebay
Just found a couple of very cheap going Fluke 1653s .
Now
1/ How do I know that these are not hot?
2/ How to get hold of the S/N before the auction ends?
3/ Is it reasonable for the seller to give out the S/N?

1) You dont that's the chance you allways take with Auction sites.

2) Contact the Seller/s & ask them, just be diplomatic about the way you ask.

3) If they're Legit yes, you can't do anything with the information other than check if they're stolen.

One of the most reliable bits of test kit ever manufactured, and the pinnacle of multimeter's until the up-market DMM units became established. One thing about those AVO units, you won't ever get fooled with any phantom bogus voltages, that a DMM unit often will...

At 26 quid, ....an absolute bargain!! I wonder if these modern DMM multi meters of today, will be around, decades after they went out of production?? These AVO models (and there were quite a few models) were built to last!!

I still have my trusty AVO also. 20,000 ohms / volt was top spec them days.... But at least it DID load the circuit enough to erradicate voltages from high impedance sources. As you dropped the range down the mysterios voltages "went away"........... Top Banana.

Yes mate exactly: You just don't get the same feel for things with a Digi. When I started there was no such thing as a Digi so I cut my Teeth on AVO's.

Same here!! Even the first time i went to work overseas the good analogue type multimeter's were still classed as the tool to have. As i can remember ''Simpson'' was the Yank equivalent to the AVO meters, they too were well built and specked. But the AVO always seemed to be the more solid of the two!! ... I still have an old valve driven oscilloscope!! Can't remember the name of it off hand. It wasn't an expensive job, but it did me, for what i wanted.. Pulled it out of it's case a couple of years ago, still working fine. The valve's are probably worth far more than the complete unit now!! ....lol!!

The Simpson 260 (Got 1 of those too), another lovely bit of kit but think the AVO wins that battle. Another superb meter but with Higher input impedance than the 8 is the TMK 700B beautiful meter to work with.
The 260 is what I started my Daughter off on, she can learn about Digi's once she's learnt about real meters lol.
