Problem with SY is do you earth the braid and if you do what calculations are you going to employ to verify its capacity for carrying fault current because the chances of finding out its resistance are zero.
 
Braid can't carry fault current can it?
This is the grey area, people say it should be earthed in case it becomes live opening up the problem can it carry fault current.

Apparently the braid isn't to be used as a cpc anyway it's for screening only.
I even read an niceic article which dismisses the braid as even being an exposed conductive part as it cannot withstand fault currents.
Go figure
 
Well I don't believe it needs earthing but those who feel it should in case it becomes live need to calculate its capacity to carry fault current.
 
Agreed. The only reason I'd use it in my house is because I always like the look of it. Good reason really. Maybe the 18th should have a section on aesthetics.

That would be interesting, so much of what I see would fail then ! :)
