So I have got a young lad on work experience with Darrel at the minute and I'm that impressed with him so far that I am seriously thinking of offering him an apprenticeship which is what he wants.

Anyway back to the story he asked me what I would charge to test his Gran's house it is a 1 bed bungalow with a 3036 Board with 4 circuits, he has asked me because she's had a quote from her insurance company and wants to compare prices. Now I have said I will do it for free for him for 3 reasons

1= it will be good experience for Him and He can say he played part in it to make his nan proud.
2= it won't take long if the 3 of us jump on it.
3= I just think it's a nice thing to do with her being an old lady.

Now to the point of the title of the thread, what do you think would be a fair price from the insurance company for this job, I will let you all have a guess
and see who gets closest.

A few of you are close enough for me so the actual price is................................................ÂŁ 980.00

How the hell can they try and get away with a price like that.

ÂŁ300:00 + vat

Unadulterated exploitation. Scum.

Have you asked them to justify that cost?

I am speaking with the lad tomorrow so will be getting as much info from him as I can.

I don't understand this phrase "fair price from the insurance company".

It's a collection of words that don't normally fit together.

At a cost of ÂŁ980 what's the rewire costs going to be,, ÂŁ6000?

That's nearly ÂŁ250 per circuit. You can bet that isn't going straight in the back pocket of the guy doing it though, he's probably on about ÂŁ10/hr, rushing around trying to do 6 EICRs a day to pay for some pencil pusher to keep calling him up telling him to work faster.

I won't be applying for any jobs like that, but big companies ripping people off gives tradesmen a reputation for being unaffordable.
