Running cable in a new build.

I was working with a contractor as part of my Electrical Trainee course and we were wiring a new build.

I noticed that the time served and apprentice trained sparky was telling me to run the cables through and around rsj's and into un-accesable places. I mentioned to him that if he would have to come back to this property in 20 years would he find it easy to work on because of where he has run the cables. He shrugged his shoulders and said it's quicker this way.

I was trained on my Electrical Trainee course to think ahead and it's also good practice to think about future sparky's who may have to work on the property while carrying out additional work. I mentioned to him it would be better to run the cable under the floorboards but he didn't want to drill the holes.

So is it best to think like a Electrical Trainee and plan ahead or like the apprentice trained sparky, do it the easiest and quickest way?

When I mentioned it the excuse was that they were 15th edition sparky's and things have change since they did their apprenticeships.

What, Im totally shocked! There are time served electricans electricians out there that havent kept up to-date with currrent regs .....

He told me that he ran out of cable on the drum and fell short. Not good.

i just dont get the idleness though of some...

i have been on a full rewire on a 4 bed house (on my own)...all the joists etc were drilled as needed with enough clearance for the cables to pull successfully...so 3 holes per joist was what was required....

4 days and first fix done...

Totally different things. Cable does not need maintenance and you don't normally want to look at it for fun, so if the route is safe, compliant and efficient to install, there's no point making more work for yourself to run it a 'nicer' route. But unneccessary, inaccessible JBs in a new build, simply poor.

I spotted some wiring from downstairs running up the wall upstairs then branching off to the sides half way up the wall. Just waiting for someone to drill through them some time in the future. I didn't say anything because I was just the Electrical Trainee getting some experience you see. Upset them and bang goes my experience.....

I am no expert yet but it was running up the middle of the wall. I would preferred staying in 200mm of the corner. Which I do believe the regs state.

I didn't have a camera on me. And I don't think I would have lasted long if I was photographing their work. But saying that I left after a week as I the only thing I was learning was how "not" to do it.
