Im currently employed full time 39hrs a week pluss OT, more and more people are asking me to do jobs for them like add extra sockets, periodic testing, install extractor fans ect... Now i would like to earn a little more money and have something to fall back on if i ever loose my main job. But i don't really know what to expect. and i cant see myself doing enough to make much on the set up costs, i'll have to buy a test meter get registered ect... how much does it roughly cost to get part p and insurance basicly ready to go?

Then on my initial assessment how can they assess me if i havent done any work yet? how does this work?

cheers

elecsa about ÂŁ460 per annum. public liability insurance around ÂŁ100 per annum. generally with elecsa, you can do the 2 jobs for assessment, then notify through elecsa after passing your assessment.

plus a meter around ÂŁ500 so all in around a ÂŁ1000 now if you can make this back then everything onward is additional money in your pocket.

depending if your job is electrical if not qualification costs will be extra

I have 2330 level 2 and 3, 2392, 2382, soon will complete the 2356 the nvq. So im pretty much fully qualified. I'll proberly do 7/8 jobs a year so i don't really know if that's worth doing.

But what if i fail my assessment then i've done a job without notifying labc, and what types of jobs do they like to see?

Part P specifically gives three levels of qualification.
a) Electricians that are a member of a body NIC, Elecsa etc. They can undertake work without first notifying building control.

b) Qualified electricians that are not members of a body. They must notify builing control before commencing work, and must show that the work has been tested iaw BS7671. BC can call for additional testing if they require.

c) None qualified electricians. They must notify bc before commencing work and bc will arrange testing after installation. (The testing according to Part P must be paid for by bc!)

How do you prove you are qualified? Your paper qualifications are a good start, do you have any experiance?

Cost wise there are few short cuts:

You MUST have insurance, its not your work you are insuring its your accidental damage to any other part of your customers property and services. Going through a gas or water main can be very expensive!

You MUST have a suitable test meter, and there are other tools that become an effective must. Like drills, a core drill if you asre doing extractors, etc...

elecsa: ÂŁ444...including VAT. then theres the insurance.....so you will need public liability and if doing PIRs...then public indemnity n all....NIC will need to see 2 jobs....a "main" job ...such as a dis board change and relevent accompanying paperwork.....and a minor works...such as an extra socket...again with the relevent paperwork (minor works)....the LABC will have to be notified beforehand with NIC. Elecsa on the other hand are happy to come out assess the work and then once you are on their scheme....you can notify that work through them.....thus saving you the LABC costs...........

To be honest I have yet known anyone to fail....................remember your a cash cow for them. I think you would have to be pretty bad and dangerous to fail.

ELECSA want a major and minor job, so you could replace the CU (major) in your home and fit an outside light (minor) also in your home
yep malc.....some of the stuff my boss n I see is outragous....some with certification.....some without....

It sure is Glenn.

But to be honest ask most of us ole f**ts mate and poor and shoddy works was around a long time before the part P silliness and I expect will still be around a long time after I hang up my overalls, just be nice if the scheme was actually geared to perhaps trying to improve standards rather than just a means of relieving us of yet more money.

In fact if ever a scheme IMO endorsed lowering of standards the Part P and it's affiliated scheme providers have managed to succeed.

well i have just about cobbled enough cash together..lol.....for my part p assessment and will transfer those funds in about early to mid december...so will be jan or feb..i would say before the assessment......so its the bgb and the green osg....thats like ÂŁ100 just there....i can feel the wallet wobble now..lol....but its the same for all of us guys in here so i aint getting the violin out over it..lol......the way i want to go forward here is to provide a quality service without seeming too expensive.....quality is the key as you dont want to be going back to jobs all the time and your name goes in front of you n all.......
