Hi,

Whats the best way to take 10mm SWA through this wall?

This is one side of it, and the other is accessible as just the metal, no block work in the way, so literally a thin sheet.

I don't usually deal with commercial buildings like this, so would like a little advice on it really.

I need to fix the cable down the outside and someone has suggested a using a bit of tray, but can only use self tappers down the outside.... so cannot get any better fix than that.

I feel I need some form of gland that will look ok and need to seal the hole up, any ideas?

I would just rather protect it thats all, I appreciate only 18" of it will be clipped direct above the dist board, and then straight into the basket, but me being me would rather protect it with an RCD. I suppose it would help if I didn't as then I could just use a 63A MCB which I can get.

The unit has RCBO's in it anyway protecting the outlets. I wonder if I can use two feeds into it, ill have to call them and ask.

What exactly will this RCD be protecting it from?

I didn't say "just add RCD and it is safe", I said I prefer to add it as it offers more protection basically. I am not getting into an argument about it.

More protection from what?

In a commercial environment you have to consider what happens in the event of a nuisance trip, in a house it really doesn't really matter in a house but in an office

Maybe it is rude, but so many questions about a simple job does raise a few questions.

If you can't get SWA through the wall neatly then find a better method, from the pictures I'd say steel conduit would be easy enough. I have said before, I am not experienced with this type of building or using tray etc etc, and was just looking for advice.

Personally I would avoid any joint in a brand new radial wherever possible, why add a potential point of failure in to a brand new circuit?

Dave you say simple questions, yes I appreciate it is simple, but was ideally looking to do it with one length of SWA without a joint but without it looking rubbish its not possible.

steel conduit, yes I could, but as i have no benders or threading tools as do not use it, its not something it would look at using. Steel conduit would quite possibly be neater, but I do not have the means to do it and not experienced enough with it to slap it on someones new office hoping i get it right.

How long it the cable run inside the building? If it's only a few metres you could strip the SWA back for that distance, gland it outside into an adaptable box and then run the cable minus the armouring through the back of the box in 25mm plastic conduit to the DB.

Most electrical wholesalers will hire out a conduit bender, if you get on well with them it will be free!
Or else eBay is good for such things, I picked mine up for £25 on there.

I don't see how anyone can call themselves a commercial electrician if they are incapable of installing what is probably the most widely used commercial wiring system.

its ok ill just go with my plan.

Im not having a go, but i was only asking for a solution to fixing to the outside of the building and taking the cable through it, nothing else, its nothing to do with it just being a simple radial circuit.

I don't have a great deal of experience in tray, basket etc, and was only asking for a bit of friendly advice as to the best way to do it from people who I thought would be friendly and suggest some options as they possibly have more experience and know better.

I am not looking for a slating, it was quite a simple question.

its rare to see inspection bends though.

i dont know why people use them? anymore than 2/3 bends and ill put a box in anyway.

Puch through 20mm/25mm, stop end box, away you go pk screws, if I had the time, I would gladly pass my knowlege on , but I still have to go out and earn an living, if only to change electric meters. lol

Thanks Gavin, presumably you get these covers that work in conjunction with cble tray etc? I've just googled it but can only find plastic covers...
why do you need tray?

tek screw cleats the the raised trapezoidal sections in a neat straight line, jobs a goodun.

And what's wrong with plastic? It's water proofing not mechanical protection. If you want to be posh then use a decktite version.

Have to admit I'm a bit baffled that this hasn't just been done yet, this isn't theoretical, we do this all the time. Other methods would also work, but that's irrelevant, just find a suitable method that works, complies, looks professional and get the job done.

There's no need to be patronising, and saying why invent I done it yet? I was merely doing a quote for the job which I have now got this afternoon, £4k cheaper than the cheapest quote.

You our may all do this every day but I dont, I don't want patronising and saying I'm useless and should t be reading or whatever de you are thinking. I came here to get advice as which was would be best suited.
