O

Octopus

So I went to see a job today. Lady has just had her boiler service and suggested that she called an electrician in!

[ElectriciansForums.net] The gas man has been!

Its a TN-S!

Checked the Zs at a socket and it came back as a very reasonable 6 ohms, not bad for parallel paths and its been like that since the early 1960's!

British Gas made the right call the customer called out an electrician (Murdoch) who confirmed the BG man then left ??? So if the tester was out why not test for a Ze and if good put a cable in or promise to return to put it in for ÂŁXX

have to disagree somewhat, here. murdoch got a Zs reading of 6.0 ohms, apparently from the services bonding, which is a better value than most TT systems can ever achieve , and it's been like that for 40 odd years! at the end of the day, he's planned to go back and sort it out: can't see the incoming water supply being converted to plastic within a couple of days. LOL.

Telectrix is spot on. I lost my mother last month and i'm terribly behind with a few jobs and visiting people to do estimates etc.

My judgement was that the 6 ohms reading was Ok and I've already planned a date with the owner to do the work. Also as its an elderly person, I'm always very careful not to do work without providing an estimate first, so there's no question later about her being bounced into unnecessary and/or expensive work.

I know it has been like that for 40 years but how long would it take to put a short link of cable in.only my opinion
most tt systems have some sort of rcd protection if it does have then i take back my original comment

then again, he could have installed an earth conductor, 16mm into a wylex 3036 board, that the 16mm won't fit into the earth bar and no RCD in sight, so would have had to be a bit of a bodge, charged her a sensible amount, then next day, along comes the old lady's son, whatever.

" can you hang up this picture for me, son?", "certainly, mum, just here?"
nail into live cable from socket, old dear comes to dust picture, touches nail, brown bread.

" now what's the name of that electrician who was here yesterday?"

And supposing you have a dozen high priority jobs all with similar problem, how do you sort that.

Theres always a variation and opinion on these things, you wer there you made your decision if it comes back and bites you or not it was your call to make and I for one wouldn't criticise it without knowing a lot more facts.

he already said it's a TN-S.

Fairplay to the OP, he didn't have to post anything on here, and as I understand it, he was only attending to have a look in the first instance, and is going back to finish/ do the job.

I don't understand the tone of some of the replies here.

Well done the Gas Man and (howlin' mad) Murdoch.

Murdoch is usually one of the first to point fingers at others #just saying

Or the old lady is cooking her tea on her 40 year old electric cooker. Internal fault and case is live she ends up in hospital and son comes to see her. Well the nice gas man said i needed an electrician so I got one. What did he do says son, oh nothing says old lady he said he would come back when he had more time.

Or she fancies havin' a go herself and opens up the fuseboard herself using a butter knife whilst balanced on one leg off a stool and hanging on to the light fitting, then slips and grabs onto the busbar whilst trying to pour a cup of tea and yodel at the same time...

and any more unlikely scenarios anyone can imagine!
