O

Octopus

So I went to see a job today. Lady has just had her boiler service and suggested that she called an electrician in!

[ElectriciansForums.net] The gas man has been!

Its a TN-S!

Checked the Zs at a socket and it came back as a very reasonable 6 ohms, not bad for parallel paths and its been like that since the early 1960's!

Or she fancies havin' a go herself and opens up the fuseboard herself using a butter knife whilst balanced on one leg off a stool and hanging on to the light fitting, then slips and grabs onto the busbar whilst trying to pour a cup of tea and yodel at the same time...

and any more unlikely scenarios anyone can imagine!

Or she is ................................... no I cant be bothered

you forgot to mention that she was bathing in her unbonded copper bath at the time.

This is getting silly.

Murdoch, let us know the readings when finished.

My first house was TT with no earth what so ever. It had only been like it for 60+ years.
and nobody was injured because the blame=claim culture was not yet imported from the good old USA

One never knows Tel. Pure good luck maybe, lack of equipment to create a shock risk. It was a very basic install.

All I know is I made things worse by earthing everything and importing faults from other houses in the road. But that’s another story.

Neither Murdoch nor any other electrician that visits the property is responsible for any defective wiring within that they did not install themselves.
Under British law the buck stops with the homeowner.
All the "what if" scenarios that are being posted on this issue are load of crap to be honest.
Murdoch is professionally obliged to advise the customer thats all.

No earth= no return path. imagine murdoch fits the earth and all the central heating and pipe work ends up at 0v.. then the brass lights which have no earth and has had a fault for years are alive.. poor old dear, holding onto that radiator reaching up to change that lamp which shes done for 40 years... well it was fine till that earth was fitted by the electrician.. sometimes its not just a simple fix. it can open a can of worms! (saying that 6Ohms aint gona cause that, but the people who say just earth it need to think of the bigger picture)

agree with edd and biff. if customer is advised of the problem, then that's it. if i take my van to the local garage and he tells me the brakes are shot and need replacing, he is not liable to fix them there and then. he gives me a price, i say yes or no, and if yes, then book it in for repair. if i crash and die on the way home with duff brakes, who in their right mind could blame the garage?

I understand what youre saying Edd , but any missing earthing needs to be replaced regardless of any possible faults down stream.
Personally i'd suggest an EICR after replacing the earth if the rest of the house wiring looks a death trap.
If they dont wanna pay , well thats their look-out.

love this place, i really dont know how a lot of you survive in the real world on site with this ridiculous jobsworths attitude

Dont see the problem with what the OP has done

Oh and sorry to hear of your loss Murdoch

I replaced a water heater today, left the cables exposed whilst i went to wholesaler, just pulled fuse out of FSU, should i wear a hair shirt for the rest of today and go to confession. Think of it someone could have put a new fuse in switched it on and grabbed the cables whilst washing their hands.
Guys its getting boring now, its none of my business how Murdoch deals with his electrical works and i doubt its any business of anyone elses here.
