Moving a meter

Hi all, I'm after some thoughts on moving a meter and main fuse, the fuse and meter is mounted on a board which is obviously screwed to the wall. There is roughly 2m of incoming armoured above ground, so what are your thoughts on pulling the fuse, disconnecting the tails coming out of the meter relocating the the board where I need it then reconnect? I know there's issues with tags but the sparky that put the new c/u has already cut both tags on the fuse and meter to upgrade tails, I can't really see any problems because I'm not having to do anything on "there" side, what are your thoughts?

Well, what would most sparks do if, say, there was a high level cupboard and a new board was going in. The new board was wider than the old and the meter was in a position where they couldn't get the board in. Would they move the meter so that they could? Obviously while keeping it on the original wood?

Simple....It's a NO NO. Your sparky knows that and no doubt he isn't going to do it. Has he informed you that he can not do it? Inform your local DNO if you require THEIR equipment moving.

Oh for God's sake ...... it's a wooden board fixed to a wall by four screws - just get on with it and shift it!!

The fact that it has a couple of boxes fixed to it is neither here nor there.

As for the DNO; do you think they keep records of the exact position of every board in every home that they supply?

How would they know it's been moved a bit and would they even care????

Crack on and get it shifted - it's what I have done more than once and if I was still working would do it again.

I may be faced with a similar scenario soon Adam. It does seem the obvious choice to just move it yourself and I wonder if most electricians do, probably wont admit it on the forum though (unless your called Geordie then you can do what you like!! :smiley2.

I'm going to stick to the rules on this one though and get the DNO to do it! Just seems a bit too much compared to just pulling the fuse (which I believe some do on occasion :smiley2

Exactly, if it's in the way, it gets moved, simple as.

I should have read your post more clearly Adam. I think you should get the DNO to move it. I make a point of not replying to DIY threads and thought you were an electrician.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, I know what your saying about the dno that's why I'm a bit hesitant. With the amount of cable above ground it just seems pointless having them out to move it a 1m, I'm not a diyer I just said the previous spark had cut the tags to replace c/u they got me in to rectify some things he left not working
