I'm doing pir's at the moment and often come across CU's with MCB's but no RCD protection. I'm wondering what views people have on removing the main isolators and fitting RCD's in their place to protect all circuits. I understand the inconvenience implications but is it ok to simply replace?
Asked to install 2 lights on a patio (minature vintage street lamp style jobs) max draw 0.5amp between the 2 (120watts total) and a small fountain. Ideally cabling to be discreetly run with minimal upheaval.
Can't bury SWA as the patio is laid on top of the "substantial" concrete floor of what...
Had a call, the lady had no power in her property.
Turn main switch off remove cover and test at incoming side of switch 230V.
Turn main switch on and at the other side of the main switch 50V. Faulty main switch I thought.
Turn off all RCD's and MCB's and have 230V where I found 50V...
if anyone knows about immersion heaters ? got economy 7, but my bottom immersion nay heating the water during the night, its getting 240v when the off peak supply comes on but does not heat up! I took a resisitance reading getting 35 ohms off the live to neutral,! just to check I tested the top...
Hello
Testing for PSCC and PEFC with the substation in view from underneath the staircase, I got one reading testing PSCC on 2000A but overload on PEFC. But on 20ka I got tests results on both PEFC and PSCC. Can I use these results on my certificate for PFC?
Cheers, as ever.
This is a control panel for a cutter machine apparently its been like this years with no cover and runs 4 x 400v motors ... the mechanical side is just as bad but believe this give the state of the machine the best reflection on this forum.
.
Now does that untidy domestic board look that bad...
I fitted a PIR sensor light to a detached garage sitting at the top of the drive, then changed to a seperate Sensor feeding the light.
I am having/had problems with them detecting correctly.
The garage is on the left of the house looking from the front, 1M away from side of house, and about 1 M...
Has anyone come across this one. situation new build bungalow, external timber framed walls are covered with a metallic damp proof membrane, metal boxes attached through DPM to dwangs then walls have been framed and drywalled. the problem is the earth continuity between any circuit that has...
Good evening chaps, ran a slave socket off the master telephone point using contacts 3 and 5 as i always do, the slave socket will ring from an incoming call and has dial tone but will not make or answer a call. I am thinking maybe i need to connect terminal 2 as well but just after some...
Just been through my phone and found some pics of things I have found on a few jobs....
This was found in a bugalow stuffed in a wall, but to be fair it did have tape around the joints.
This is a classic, but they did use brown sleeve.
Found in a loft, same place as the switch above.
Needed a...
Hi all,
Please have a look at this video and see if you might know what could be causing the flickering..
A brief description of the supply layout of the property are outlined in this thread...
Hi, I have broached this subject before out of interest but have lost the thread -
i now have a requirement to replace a normal light switch with some sort of neon or illumination to indicate its on.. there is no neutral at the switch so a DP indicated switch etc is not on. It will be a big...
Hi everyone I'm a young budding electrical engineer working a lot with 3 phase panels contactors, relays, motors, and various switching equipment. Was just wondering if any if you guys would happen to no any decent books out there on the fundamentals of the panels and fault finding. Thanks for...
Hi chaps
Having quite a heated discussion with a colleague about a 4 pole RCD. He originally installed a 30mA RCD which now needs to be changed to a 100mA, however the N is on the opposite side. He seems to think that putting L1 into N of the RCD, L2 into L1, L3 into L2 and Neutral into L3...

Came up against them last week. They are doing pv solar, thermodynamcis and horrendously expensive Rointe heaters...
Apparently they are "guaranteeing" a 40p tariff for the lifetime of the FIT. Customer claims the standard 15.44p and the company pays 24.56p. Customers can only claim...
Ok so after reading previous post on how to stop the flicker from leds/cfl's when switch is turned off i've bought some contact suppressors!
My question is where on the circuit should these be fitted?
Thanks in advance,
Marc
Ok, my flat was built in about
1960, it has a very old wylex fuse box for which the fuse for the heating and
power is one switch. The lights have blown but I still have power.
In
the past when the fuse has blown the power and lighting has been lost so
therefore the fuse has not blown this...
I'm going to be doing an install on an existing warehouse unit soon, (mez floor offices dado trunking lighting etc) I went and put a supply into the temp office the other week and noticed that the supply is 3 phase and on a TT. Has anybody else come across this? The install is relatively new and...
Hello all,
I have spent hours looking at this 2 gang, 1 way switch and I can not for the life of me figure out how to get the neon light to come on with BOTH switches! One conductor from the neon has to go into the neutral terminal, the other into L1 on one of the switches, which means the neon...
