What's the best way to gain access to a loft? I'm a fat bloke, when i pull on the loft hatch to climb up the whole ceiling feels like it's going to give way! It's one of those things that sounds simple in theory...
Hi everyone,
I have just got back from my friends place, he is doing a loft conversion. i noticed that he has run the new wiring for the lights and ring main out. but my concern is that he has run it under the new joist and on top of the insulation. For the lighting circuit it is between the...
Hi all, went to quote up a rewire on lighting circuit in a bungalow today. It turns out that they had new insulation laid just over 2 weeks ago. The insulators had left room around the light fittings (recessed 12v 50w halogens) but they totally covered up the transformers. After a quick look...
Hey guys, i got asked to check out someones lighting in their massive bathroom!!! it was huge, but anyway they had 6 normal non fire protected downlighters installed.
I got up into the loft space, two of the transformers had gone and one of the ceramics had worn out.
I even noticed on top of...
OK. I'm a sparky but never dabble in PV.
Looking at a project for myself which will include a full refurb. Our budget does not stretch to installing PV but I plan to install a hi integrity board so the PV can be on a MCB or RCBO in the future. Cable run would be 10 m max
What I'd like to know...
Following on from a previous post where the OP was slightly paranoid that he was going to die due to drilling one hole is what he thought was asbestos.
does anyone know, or read a report about what fibreglass loft insulation is doing to us.
is fibreglass inhalation going to be the disease of the...
Hi guys,
I can't see a problem with this but just after some reassurance.
In my loft I'm having a boiler installed so going to put some power and lighting up there for it including a solid flooring.
I've run the upstairs ring up there for a double socket. I want to provide a spur for the...
Hi all,
Installing a couple of lights in a loft, the loft is not technically within the living space of the house so I was wondering if the usual height requirements for switches applied as the loft is only used for all the familys crap they have aquired over the year
Recently had a my boiler fixed which is located in the roof space. He recommended that i get a 70W heater/lamp installed near the combi boiler due to the cold temperatures this time of year to stop any condensation type problems inside. Does anyone have any suggestions what he might mean?
Hi guys, iv been asked to install 1 socket in a loft conversion and 1 light. This guy is doing the building work and told me the building inspector has asked for the electrical work to be signed off. Am i under any obligation to produce a cert? Im not altering or installing a new circuit so i...
Hello all,
I will be having my assessment on Oct 11th and have completed a CU change and also an addition to a lighting circuit. I am completely happy with the CU change but am unsure about the cable routing in the loft for the lighting addition.
At present all the cables in the loft simply...
Ok so I've been rewiring a untenanted family members home this week just gone and in the loft was some kind of industrial light the sought you might find in a dockers yard
It's 500mm diameter at the base of a dome shade ceramic green paint made by maxlume I was going to lob it but it was in...
Hi All,
I am currently doing a large rewire, and one of the issues that has cropped up is downlights in the flat roof loft conversion.
Good practice states that a loft brace should be used to allow good air circulation above and around the down light, and to allow thermal bridging by laying...
hi guys
anyone have any good ideas re routing shower circuits in the loft space when the amount of insulation means the joists are not even visable ?. i was thinking 25mm conduit supported via rafters, or building a batten run above the insulation and clipping to that. any ideas for where the...

hi just been to look at a job, have to get a cable accross 4 joists ( perpendicular) now i know drilling loft joists is a no no, the cable run will be in an area of the loft not used for storage and the customer has no intention to board out the loft is there anything wrong with laying the...
Evening Chaps....
Just seeing if anyone out there has done/does the electrics for many loft conversions. Only done the odd one many many years ago when first started out on the books.
After a fair bit of perseverance have managed to get myself in with a local company that specialise in that...
Hi everyone. This year I converted the loft into a bedroom. This was done when the weather was cooooool. Now, over the last few days I have found the temperature up there to be unbearably hot, even well after the sun has gone down. The skylights have been open the whole time. Anyone any...
How well do solarPV inverters cope with being in a typical loft?
What do you think about locating inverters in the loft?
Have you noticed an inverter having to reduce its power output to allow itself to cool?
Or will we have to wait and see how last autumn's rush of installations performs -...
As above really. All the rewires I have done recently have had mountains of this stuff installed. So is it bed to lay ontop of this stuff or continue to clip direct under if( which I have always done)
