Morning guys,

Just had a phone call of a company. Who do PIR in large
Industrial premise. Wanted to know how many I can do in a day.and he said he has one guy who can do 30 to 40!!! "can you do the same" I said not a chance he can't be doing any inspecting. He's answer was "well he starts at 6am and finishes at 10 pm. And when I said no thanks. He then said what about PAT testing. We have guys doing 350 per day can you match it. I said how much are you paying them he said 40p an item.
Is it me or is this a joke. Is someone trying to wind me up on a Friday :banghead::banghead:

takes me about 2-3 hours with 2 people to do a house test 6-8 circuits and lighting circuits done with R2 wander lead

What would you be charging for that if don't mind me asking? Ive just been undercut on PIR's out of my town by someone doing them for £60 each. I was over double that!

I have too much of a conscience to rip customers off by cutting corners on testing and making results up, i just can't do it to people. I wouldn't sleep at night. I'd rather loose the work and leave the trade if that's what it come too

I'm sure theres many genuine electricians doing domestic PIR's for under £100.. And I'd love to know there tricks on how they manage to do them so quickly.. My PIR's always take from half a day to a full day most times.

I dont think they are doing them right because a PROPER pir for less than £100 to me is a nonsense.........

Unfortunately TPES if you have outlayed 5/6k for retraining or have not had steady work for a while, with the costs of van, tools scheme(or not in some cases!!!) etc etc, then a 100 pound a day is better than nothing pounds a day.

It's a sad time, but basic laws of supply and demand, if you have 2-3 guys going for a bid you can be fairly sure that prices will maintain a decent level, if you have 8-10 now then prices will drop rapidly, as you then have a bidding war.

I'm glad I'm not the only one
theres big well established firms doing them for £90, firms with good reputations.. I just can't see how there doing it. As said before though there making there money on the code 1 and 2 remedial work to put there price back up to make the PIR worth while i suppose

The problem here though is your going to get a "charly browns" situation.......that is to say unscupilous (PIR-less than £100) types of people will be sure to find some 1s and 2s before leaving....if you know what i mean..............

I remember whilst looking for guidance on PIR codes I found the website of a company offering PIRs and they had example codes, most of their examples were code 1 and they were things like unlabelled consumer units, and missing sleeving, a blatant fraud I feel.
You either have people coming in to do a paperwork exercise, here you are mate, its all fine, the numbers I've made up look lovely.
or they are going in and having a quick look, that'l be £60 please, oh by the way these "immediate dangers" are essential work that'll be another £200.

Do the job and do it properly.

it's like discounted MOT's. a loss leader and then make the money on the repairs.

Well yep thats right ( I have just commented on this in the PAT section)but sometimes this does not work as I sometimes mop up at the small repairs because the letting agent knows what I will charge and does the maths

Thats why i was quoting charlie browns earlier......offering free checkups then once that car is on the lift....start racking up the "faults".....wasn`t there a documentary on all that a while ago?

A lot of companies do this and have done it for years ie take on the main contract at a loss hopeing to make it up on the extras but people are on to this hence why maybe some companies are going to the wall but we can talk and sometimes bitch about this for long enough but as I said before shame on the registration companies who are quite happy to take the subs but have no intention of policing the system because they dont want to rock the boat all we can do is maintain a standard dont get involved in £50 PIRs and hope the customer see,s this for what it is yes some will always want it done cheap but like I said to one customer why do you fight to the death with me over £300 to upgrade your intruder alarm yet you willingly pay £20k for a car that sits out in the street and then pay £550 for an interm service because you think its worth it even although you have just paid all that money for a oil change
