if some are knocking on peoples doors slagging the work of competitors they must be very bitter men,its small time at best, weve all seen others work and think either, nice job or i could do better than that but to knock on doors or grass to the gaffer have a word with yourselves man..,one mans meat is another mans poison

You're absolutely right.

I've watched our industry get dragged through the gutter by dodgy installers and salespeople. Is there any wonder I'm bitter?

I don't expect everyone's work to be of the same standard but there is a certain standard that every installer should be able to work to.

i dont do solar, but i wouldnt knock on anyones door slagging anyones work, theres only one person who looks the fool personally i feel sorry for the well established solar co's thats been going 20-30 yrs, then suddenly the band wagon has been well and truly jumped on and everyones an expert..its worse than part p..the chancers that now do solar are the ones slagging each other off...like i said small time behaviour imo

Presumably you install alarms and jumped on that particular band wagon yourself at some point.

Presumably if you were to see a badly installed alarm system (to be a good analogy it would need to be so badly installed that it literally compromised the structure of the building it was installed on), you would simply shrug and think "Oh well. That's tough. The system could do with being sorted out but I'm not getting involved. That's small time behaviour. Only a chancer would be worried about something like this."

specsavers are doing solar...everyones at it now...

another scenario is a young lass buys an outfit from topshop, she thinks she looks the biz,she wanders into primark and the primark saleswoman says excuse me,that outfit from topshop doesnt work on you its all wrong, your a fat minger and you wont get a bloke why did you buy it?,but we can sell you a nice bag for your head which will improve yours looks, will the lass buy the bag or stick with the oufit she likes and walk out the shop thinking you cheeky ****..whats the difference

The difference is very simple.

A saleswoman saying that a dress is wrong for someone is a subjective opinion. If the dress is wrong for this woman it isn't going to cause her roof to collapse, invalidate her warranty on a ÂŁ10k+ investment nor give less than idea returns on that investment.

not quite i joined the security industry working for a national company,as opposed to jumping on a badwagon for a quick buck, ive seen some poor installs of course, some might say the same of mine, but i wouldnt walk into a shop and tell the manager where his alarm is all wrong etc..just because we didnt get the job.

but its not up to you to police the industry

Totally agree with alarm man here. Stop worrying about other peoples work. They will soon be found out. I get annoyed that these short course blokes are taking my work but I don't go knocking on customers doors saying hes a Electrical Trainee.

Put yourself in a customers shoes. You have a PV installation carried out where the panels are installed against the manufacturers instructions exerting untold stress on the modules. Would you prefer a concerned person to knock on your door and point out a potential problem giving you the chance to talk to the installation company to ask them to rectify the problem before they go out of business like many others? Or would you prefer people to just ignore it, your modules to fail then find out the installation company has gone out of business leaving you no choice but to employ the services of another company to remove and install new panels and the rails correctly?

I know there's ways of going about your approach to the customer but I know what I would prefer...

but where does it stop,do you then point out everything thats wrong with their house,do you check the cars tyres are legal,do you make sure their kids have done the homework etc etc,up my way its called sticking your nose where its not wanted..if the home owner is happy with what they got then theres nowt you can do about it,if they got a cheap job by a cowboy they will find out the hard and expensive way..

That's half the problem - some installers just don't "get" customers, usually reflected in the service they provide to customers. If you've a conscience you try to help where you can, if you haven't - well your just as bad as the "bandwagon" kids. No difference in my book.

Where are how you deal with and where the line is that you don't cross is the difficult bit - of course the easy way to go is - nothing to do with me guv.

Sometimes I wish I didn't have a conscience or morals - life would be soooo much easier :)

I know where you're coming from but if you were the customer would you prefer concerned people just kept their concerns to themselves or that they gave you advice that you could act on?

but thats the problem, customer thinks he has a good deal, and by turning up on someones doorstep telling them they havnt isnt going to go down well with the customer or the installer and anyone doing it may find themselves in at best a slanging match or worse a violent situation,in a world where people will step over someone dying in the street some wonky solar panels isnt worth the hassle..

So you wouldn't be grateful if somebody knocked on your door and politely pointed out a problem with the best of intentions?
I can't believe you'd actually resort to a slanging match with them or even turn violent when all they were trying to do is help you.

i never said i would turn violent i was pointing out the potential situations you could find yourself in,if your so concerned why dont you drive round and knock on all the doors of installs you dont agree with and report your findings.
