Hi all realy silly question maybe. Doing consumer change on old consumer 3036 type! now if all test,s out right is it our job to fit rcd protected mcb,s or rcbo,s or indeed any rcd protection at all ! or is it down to what the customer wants to pay ? what are the rules on this? thanks ian:confused:

Got nothing to contribute to the discussion Dave other than childish comments?
I don't believe that I've insulted you or your viewpoint, why should you consider it neccessary to insult me and mine?

It would be interesting to know who you are registered with Spinlondon, because I'm with Elecsa and I wouldn't want to show them a CU upgrade which didn't have full RCD protection using 2 RCD's or a complete set of RCBO's!

yep im thick me ;)

however to bring another exiting thread to a close, i would like to point the op to the 10 or so opinions from both new and respected members of this forum to your attention against the one opsing opinion and allow you to make up your own mind as to what you believe the best course of action ;)

not that we are all right there have been plenty of other single opinionated people throughout history:
hitler, stalin, castro, Hussein, amin etc etc

ps. if you check the post you will find a few spelling mistakes which i could go back and correct - but what the hell lets live dangerously :) :)

Spinlondon if i am understanding you correctly then you are saying that rcd protection does not have to be at the cu? This would only be correct if you can be sure that every cable leaving the cu is burried 50mm or more, or be in steel conduit ect until the point that you do rcd that circuit. some circuits will require an rcd no matter what ie sockets and bathroom circuits. so unless you are sure the circuits are correctly installed to the requirments then you DO need rcd protection at the cu. This is also the cheapest and easiest way to ensure everything is ok.

Sorry was called away.

After reading what everyone has said, I don't understand where your coming from. Please tell me and the forum how you would complete this job. That being as the OP said a domestic, to change an old BS3036 wylex consumer unit. Using say the least amount of RCDs/RCBOs as possible, but still meeting the regs.

I'm only asking as I am curious as how to do this now.

I don't want to get up your nose, but your confusing me

Hawk81. Sockets circuits do not require RCD protection, it is the sockets themselves that require RCD protection.
Yes if the cables are buried as they leave the CU, then they will require the RCD protection to be in the CU.
However where cables are not buried as they leave the CU as is the case in many installations, then RCD protection does not have to be in the CU.
Yes the cheapest option if you are providing RCD protection is to place the RCD in the CU.
My point is: If you change a CU, you are not required by BS7671 to provide RCD protection if that protection can be placed somewhere other than the CU.
I am suggesting that you could comment on the lack of RCD protection in the section on the certificate for comments on the existing installation.

I do think that I have already suggested how this could be achieved.
However, install the new CU with RCBOs for any bathroom circuits MCBs for the rest, and make a note of the lack of RCD protection for sockets and cables in the section provided in the certificate for comments on the existing installation.
