Says who? Where does this 'supposed to' come from?
You can use whatever colour you like as long as it is correctly marked by either colour or alphanumeric marking at each termination.

There is however a strong convention to use the same cores of a three core as were used prior to the change and it is best practice to follow this convention.
Says the NICEIC, joking aside I can see the argument for not using a black as a neutral, okay regarding sleeving most of us would sleeve a black core with an appropriately banded colour should it be used for a neutral, I think the rumour regarding avoiding black as a neutral came about after harmonisation as a way of trying to avoid a potential mix up with a black which is now a phase colour, I was far happier with Red Yellow Blue myself, as black is now a phase colour avoiding using a black core as a neutral common sence really.

since when has common sense been a consideration when changing the colours to these ridiculous neutral "colours"? black and grey have never been colours. they're monochromic. and brown is borderline. :hammer:

Well here goes !!!!

I tag black as neutral and grey as earth and all of our blokes are told to do so whilst on any of our jobs .
There I have done it now , you know my dirty little secret !
And as to date I have not been given a reason , why it is worthy of a change in doing so .:tank:
Black = neutral more than grey does .

Well if you are told to do it then you are not responsible for doing so, should you be under my supervision, well I would dismiss you without notice

Why Mike , can you give me any reason apart from personal preference ?

if the core is flagged with blue sleeve, i can't see a problem. however it has become the norm to use grey ( sleeved blue) for neutral and black ( sleeved gn/y) for cpc/earth. what if using multicore flex where all cores are black (maybe with a gn/y)? a convention with numbered cores is to ise odd nos. for Lives and even nos. for N's, but this is not always followed.

I know Mike , I was going to include in my reply , that it is a bloody good job that I am probably unemployable anyway !

He is very knowlegeable without any doubt at all, a good guy and a very good electrician, it would be nice to see a bit of a personality come out of him as well though, Merry Christmas Dave

Davesparks don't leave him hanging, sounds like Mike's got the mistletoe out.

Black = neutral more than grey does .

Do you join blue to black and yellow to grey when extending an existing 3 core cable too?

The logic behind this is quite simple

Core 1 which was previously red is now brown and gets used for Live
Core 2 which was previously yellow is now black and gets used for earth
Core 3 which was previously blue is now grey and gets used for neutral.

Dave I can see your logic with that .
But being as well when the powers that be decided to alter the colours they neglected to issue a reg dictating how we should interpret ( I have yet to find one ) and subsequently use them , I went this way .

My way of thinking was Live is primary , Neutral is secondary and Earth is last .

With numbered multi-core , sequentially the Lives are first then Neutral followed by Earth being last , and any spare after that then being tagged down to Earth as well .

For 2 way I expect to see brown at the top in common , then black in way 1 with grey in way 2 .

On a side note , when it comes to any connections , unless already marked I go with live first then earth in the middle , with neutral last . This way if either connection should pull out / melt they have more chance of earthing out first .

This has been raised with me before , but as I say I am yet to hear a good reason why not to continue with what is now the pattern in our installs and has been since the change .

There isn't a direct reg but it is mentioned in Appendix 7 of the BGB.
