Sometime ago I had my 15yr old, wanting to know the advantages and disadvantages of a ring to a radial sockets, and all I could think of was, you dont have to worry about volt drop in a ring and how much costly it could be, then I realised :banghead: I had been in the trade for while and felt like a mug I can't even managed enough solid reasons. I would appreciate any more contribution so I can go back and tell him, with head high, chest busting and he thinks old man is a genius.

Radials are a European thing, BS1363 will be taken away from us next!
If it’s European I’m against it. We’ve given way with everything else.

Have a look at some of the crap used around the world

OK it’s a bit of an illogical argument but BS1363 has served well for 64 years, why mess about with it. The only gain I can see is to the CU manufacturers, bigger CU’s with lots of MCB’s.

To be honest, I'm all for Harmonization.
The sooner those Johnny foreigners learn to speak English the better.
on a serious note spin i`m more than a bit fed up of walking down the street someware and hearing some ineligable gabble. It should be policy that those wishing to come here no1. have some kind of meaningful skill (thad doesn`t include herding goats up a hill) and no2. will endevour to learn the english language and our customs..........

You live in cyprus dont you 54? would you ever concider returning to the uk? I wouldn`t blame you if you didn`t! lol.........

That's my permanent home yes, but for the next few years based here in China and HK. Which will be my very last project!! Not really sure how i'm going to handle retirement mind. I'm sure i'll find something to keep the mind active.

Just before i left Cyprus to come here, i became a licenced member of the Council of Engineers in Cyprus. So will probably do a bit of consultancy work here and there. ...lol!!!

As for ever returning to UK, probably not mate, from what i can see, there's nothing much to come home too!! The place has been ruined, by successive governments on both sides of the fence. I always feel like a foreigner in my own country whenever i go back to visit family now....

Yeah mate....for now i just have to keep attending college and learn as much as possible by coming in here and watching/listening to my boss at work but who knows where this industry will take me? Will i still be here in 10-15 years time?.......

You seem to me a level headed guy, that's taking in what your learning. You make a lot more sense, than some of the newly qualified sparks on the forum. You also tend to only ask about those tricky type questions, not the stuff that should have been well and truly learnt and become second nature!! ..lol!!

Now if a lot of that is down to the Boss/Electrician your working for, then my hat's off to him, he's doing a decent job of training one of the better future sparks into our industry.

When you have gained enough experience in the workplace, start thinking outside the box, look around and find a specialisation. One that is interesting and will be lucrative for many years to come. As an example, ...a high end testing commissioning Tech/Eng Covering everything from your usual 17th ed stuff, setting up VCB, GCB etc, protection relays and control, to protection co-ordination studies. It will involve learning and using both primary and secondary injection test kits, and a hell of a lot of other test kit, that you have probably never even heard of yet!! That profession has the ability for you to see the world, while being highly paid in the process. ...lol!!!

Wish you luck anyway, in whatever field you choose to follow or specialise in....

I’ve never left and I feel like a bloody foreigner.

Walk down the street and I’m lucky if I hear one English voice.
