Having a debate regarding spurs from a ring circuit, my lecturer at my 2391 course a few year back claimed that it was ok to have 1 spur per socket in a ring circuit, I know it ain't good practise but I can't find anything in regs book to confirm or deny point, any help much appreciated, cheers

"Hello ipf",

Thanks for your reply.

What I wanted to know is why a Spur Socket is supplied by just one cable from a Junction box cut into the Ring Circuit and not as I described an extension of the Ring Circuit by using 2 Junction boxes and running 2 lengths of cable `in and out` of the Socket Outlet to complete the Ring Circuit ?

Another example of something that I could have written / asked about in ONE Paragraph - unlike my message above !

Regards,

Chris

Because it is easier and cheaper and in many circumstances perfectly adequate. Also it has been a standard practice for so long there waould likely be a peasants revolt if the suits ever decided to regulate against the practice.

This is also possible.. there were other unused breakers in there used as blanks.

Not really my angle though... how does everyone feel about this circuit arrangement with regards to the regulations and safety issues ?

it would comply if all the cable was in free air (ref E) and in a room sufficiently cold enough (all the time) to lower the temperature bit of "k" to get it into the right value .... (Tongue in cheek)

Hi Chris. With a spur from a ring final circuit, current is limited by the plug fuses....hence a maximum of one double socket or, as we were taught 14th edition wise, two singles.
Regulation 433.1.103 spurs can feed 1 double or 1 single sockets

There are and always have been many way's of wiring a final ring circuit, including spurring methods. One once common method of ring wiring was too ring the JB's and spur off to the socket outlets!! Very common in council house properties in the late 50's, very early 60's. ....lol!!

Cables in free air, cold enough and he wrong OCP devices. You've vistited Scotland haven't you!? This is 'crofters wiring'!

ring final? Unless it's the last one then it's possibly the final ring of a ring final? ;)

We are... but i was referring as to how we were taught via the 14th, if you re read.
I agree mate but with so many trainees reading this forum, who knowa someone may have the idea that it's OK to spur 2 single sockets as a non fused spur, wasn't trying to be a smart bum

Never crossed me mind, mate....the smart bum bit, that is. Good job we're not working to the 14th, though, we'd be up in smoke by now....

Remind me what era was the 14th I think I grew up with it in the 60s could be wrong though, memory is not that good lol
