Re: Tell us about your faults !

Local hotel - asked for signs removing from outside of building - I said "I can do that". Found mcb all labelled nicely and followed cable into wall and tracing visually, its an simple run so a cut at both ends and pull cable out will be easy.

I'm a bit picky though so I opened up a sign and spotted 1mm T&E. But its 1.5 Twin at the breaker. Energised and Mr Fluke Magic wand tells me its def that cable. How nice of someone to swap from twin, to twin and earth in a junction box hidden by wooden panelling. Easy how one hour becomes three. And I'm crap at joinery.

Re: Tell us about your faults !

fitted new dis. board ( 2 RCDs ) put uptairs light on one RCD, downstairs lights on the other. all fine till switchedon landing light ( 2 way ). both RCDs tripped. turns out whoever had done the original installation on a wylex rewirable board had taken the live feed form downstairs and the neutral fom upstairs. DOH!!!

Re: Tell us about your faults !

Nice chap complained that when he left his house to go on holiday he switched off his mains but his outside lights still worked.

Lights wired from garage........old wylex rewireable fuse CU (both 16A)......so called sub-main for garage wired into incomers.....oh how I laughed....

Re: Tell us about your faults !

here's a beauty. plumber called me out because the new shower that he had fitted some 3 weeks ago had blown its fuse ( 30A rewirable ). First thought was --- new shower higher rating than old one. my solution was to fit separate " mini" board, RCD and 40A MCB as there was no RCD in the old board. guess what. on testing circuit with my trusty megger, dead short P/E/N. opened shower unit and could not believe!!! 6mm incoming cable too short for termination so Mr. Plumber had twisted and taped a bit of 1.5mm flex onto the 6mm. all melted in a glorious lump. Wonderful. told him to stick to wet work .
