Re: Tell us about your faults !

I went out to a call out today, no heating no burglar alarm
found the motorized valve down to earth, a sparkie had called before and so say tested it and found no fault
pity he never looked at the floor underneath or opened the lid
it was soaked
also checked for bonding, all disconnected !!
and checked the main earthing only to find a clamp on the incoming lead sheathed cable!!!
and a recent consumer unit
down the side was an earth wire cut off leading to an external electrode??
hey ho more work
last week I visited a builder to look at a new house he has purchased
its an old shop with a flat above and some more rooms at the rear
I found a wylex 4 way c/u with a smashed lid covered in tape, mounted on a board that was so full of woodworm it crumbled to my touch, then a henley block fed the tails to it and to a 60A fused isolator and on to another C/U at rear
the wylex at rear was hanging from the ceiling with the back exposed
loose wires and broken switches all over the place
and to make things worse when I tested for a safe earth nothing nada sod all
the incoming supply 100A is TNS with a lovely braided cable to a big terminal for earth but nothing connected to it??
I found an earth wire going from the first C/U connected to the gas pipe!!
and this chap was plastering and carrying out wet work all around
ye gods
I installed an earth link and isolated most of the wiring leaving him one socket
and he did not have one single 110V tool on site
I have to rewire it for him now after a little chat explaining the dangers
usually on sites you get the sparkie to isolate stuff and install a temp supply with 30Ma rccds and sockets metal clad to feed the 100v kit
maybe he is lucky or well insured

Re: Tell us about your faults !

if I knew how to post pics on here I would post some real horrors
I always take pics to protect myself as I have in the past visited sites condemned the wiring and isolated the supply only to find it back in use and the client telling me an electrician had looked at it?
well thats true I suppose

Re: Tell us about your faults !

i got a pig of a one ,Hotel lighting circuit tripping the MCB intermitantly , and some of the lights not working well 7 infact , the circuit is a tad overloaded with 8 chandelers 6 wall lights 10 other lights , and an odd piece of twin and earth thrown in , so the first area to look at is where the supply has been lost as this is very lickly to be the cause of the fault , but cant find it checked every light fitting appart from a few slightly over heated cables all look fine , how ever there are 4 single cables end of line type ,still the feeds are dead , its all fed from a jb behind the bar but then splits into 2 areas toiles and function room , so my worst nightmare is a junction box in the ceiling ,and guess what yes its a flat roof ,so heading back tomorrow with camera and a pad saw some holes to be cut i think argghhh

Re: Tell us about your faults !

the daftest one,
I used to work for a big construction company mainly doing the building maintenance
we needed a new canteen block (it was a huge site) so I thought a new or refurbished site building would be obtained, we were not short of money and the group owned a cabin hire company
my boss lets just call him the great gordini who is a legend in his own mind decides to save money !! and re use an old building we had on site that was waiting for destruction, quite honestly it looked liked the titanic
the roof was bowed and rotten, the metal sides had corroded through from 30 years use and different services being punched through, the floor was rotten, in fact it was awful, I voiced my opinions to a director that it would be a waste of time and money to mess about with it, we are a proffesional company lets get a decent unit in already wired and plumbed so I just have to connect the tails and inlets up?
no it seems the great gordini is a member of a fraternity, lets just call it that and director is a member as well funny handshakes etc
so a crane was hired at great expense and a special lifting frame had to be hired as this cabin could collapse and if so the sudden shock on the crane would topple it ( 15 tonne lifting power) 75 tonne crane
all day they messed about bolting this cradle together then it was fitted and the cabin lifted, as it lifted up bits fell off
once in place contractors arrived to give quotes for repairing it plating the sides and painting it
every single one thought it was a wind up for TV the thing was that bad ( I still have the pictures)
all the staff said no way did they want to use this thing as a canteen
it was truly embarrasing to behold for a multi million pound outfit
it needed the roof replacing, trusses installing, new sections installing, windows replacing and the floor
as the roof was leaking ( and back through the floor) the great gordini decided to install tarpaulins to cover the roof and dry it out, why I dont know
now health and safety is a big thing accidents cost time and money
so I got a large pair of steps and took them round the back to arrange the tarps on the roof and secure them
the great gordini did likewise, however he then decided that the tarps needed something placing on them to prevent them blowing away, I suggested getting the fork lift ( a big thing for lifting big things) and dropping them gently on the roof
no he knew better
he got hold of a huge pallet made of hardwood and proceeded to lift it up and over his head, I was watching this and told him it was lethal as the thing would tip over
no he knew better!!!!
as he got the thing halfway above his head its weight spat him backwards in a levering action and off he flew into the air
I jumped down and ran like a greyhound even though the bloke was a wally I did not want to see him hurt
that sickening feeling came over me
I was expecting to find him dead on the concrete
luckily as he fell he hit a nice car that had been parked where it should not have been, it had a pricey metallic paint job that changed as you moved around it
he then landed on his back and luckily for him the traffic cone that the girl had moved to park the car went across his neck and stopped him fracturing his skull, although he took a hard knock
I wanted to get an ambulance but he would not hear of it ( risk assesment method statement his responsibility) and he staggered off like a drunk, knowing that head injuries and mild fractures can often kill you later I went and spoke to a senior member of staff,( who owned said car) turned out the great gordini denied any knowledge and said he just slipped ( from 8 feet) he was sent to hospital and treated and I was thanked for being sensible
but the best bit was the huge dents in the car!!!
the firm had to pay for that as it was privately owned and belonged to senior member of staff.

well I got so fed up with the great gordini showing off and telling me how much money he was saving!!! ( 1k on the car alone)
I cheated a little
I placed food inside on the holes in the floor, every day early and loosened a drain cover, quite soon rats arrived and took up residence in the floor cavity, on a visit to examine this great work a female member of staff screamed out and ran away, she then relayed her thoughts to the powers that be get rid of it
it was scrapped on site by a specialsit team
then removed and the site cleared
a nice secondhand unit was delivered in sections by a lorry with its own crane fitted together and we then connected all the services all up and running in a day
still on site looking smart
the cost? well
if you add up the cost of a 15 tonne lifting crane, the cradle, the damage to the car and hire car costs, and the scrapping costs they came to exactly the same amount as a new unit delivered and fitted
I have lots of funny stories but cant tell many of them as they might get people into trouble
I think they might still be in business as well
I am glad I only have one idiot to deal with these days and that me
ps one day I might give you a link to the pictures
