i was trying to install 2 switched fused conenection units on a ring circuit. at the start of the job i cut through a live wire which tripped the whole db. i connected the fcus ok. then put a socket plate on another one which had been wired ready. when i turned the board on the socket with the fcus has no power anymore this is the one which i origanlly cut through and the new socket has power but every time i test between earth it trips the whole board again... anoyone any ideas?

using voltage testers you should test between line and neutral first for say five seconds and then between line-cpc it apparently doesnt trip then because the testers are "charged" or something like that

that it was im am doing and always putting the tester on neutral first, or cpc first then earth but to no avail.charged or not it just trips it out on the upstairs ring and downstairs ring. so i would think there was already a earth fault on there somehow and now just as i have worked on it, it has showed up?

I shudder when I hear stuff like 'but im not sure' -

Safe isolation to begin! then if you have a ring main you should have done end to end tests on your live and earth conductors, if your ring is open any further loading with an inappropriate protective device could be very dangerous, I presume you have some test equipment to perform the minimum continuity and insulation tests etc etc required by the reqs? also is this circuit feeding a special location if so you should have informed your building control before starting work...unless you are a member of a part p body (napit nic etc)..... I could go on and on but if you have any questions about the couple of points I have raised get a proper sparky in! at a minimum you should be certifying this work as it is a circuit addition and not an accessory replacement!

If you are in the Plymouth area I would be happy to drop by free of charge...

Jon.

Get a spark in to check your problem. where are you based?
I had a similar problem once where the kitchen ring kept tripping out, you would power it up and after an hour or maybe more the ring would trip out again, even on no load. After numerous hours of head scrachting and head banging I sorted the problem. Oh yes the similarity, lol, was that when I tested between live and neutral I also got 230v however between live and earth the rcd would trip out. Turned out to be a loose neutral, and I am more then certain its the same issue here.
Anyway good luck, and don't do it yourself call someone in the know, you have allready had a narrow escape, dont tempt fate.

3 core wouldn't, but 3 core and earth should I think. The live from the UH4 could feed both the brown and grey of the valve.
