i was trying to install 2 switched fused conenection units on a ring circuit. at the start of the job i cut through a live wire which tripped the whole db. i connected the fcus ok. then put a socket plate on another one which had been wired ready. when i turned the board on the socket with the fcus has no power anymore this is the one which i origanlly cut through and the new socket has power but every time i test between earth it trips the whole board again... anoyone any ideas?

Yes especially Neutral to Earth, your placing a Low impedance between N / E & creating an Earth imbalance. All the RCD is doing is exactly what it's intended to do: sensing the imbalance as a fault & disconnecting the circuit.

Normally spurs are from the nearest socket on the ring, check that first.

If not there, Isolate power to ring circuit, start taking socket fronts off until you find one with three sets of wires. Separate the wires and continuity test them to your spurred socket.

no one lives close enough to come round we will just have to see if we can find an electrician. its not urgent anyway we dont neeed it working now.funeral really mate its 230.yes i know its possible but bery very unlikely.

wallyyanker when i find the socket it comes from what would i need to do. just check there is continuity between them. if there is and thats ok then what to get it working. i know it hards to try and explain with out seeing it sorry.

IF it is the spur that does not work but the rest of the ring does, then I am sure you will not have continuity on one of the conductors.

Sounds like you need to pull a new cable in.

If you have any doubts in what you are doing, please dont jump in and have a go.

Little knowledge can be more dangerous than no knowledge.

Thanks

Well matt i've gotta be fair to you: That's 1 of the Dumbest statements i've heard in a long time & if you think it's very, very unlikely it shows how little you know about Electricity. I don't know about the rest of the boys on here but that's the last information i'm likely to give you. Not only on this topic but any to do with Electricity.

It only takes 50mA to kill at that voltage mate. This thread scares me for your sake.

3 core wouldn't, but 3 core and earth should I think. The live from the UH4 could feed both the brown and grey of the valve.
