has anyone installed a ups battery back up system?

If they only need the UPS for the computers and not for printers, servers, networks, etc, then they could use laptops.

The C&G website can tell you which colleges are approved to run the course, though not all will currently offer it www.cityandguilds.com/45768.html. I can't see it on the websites for Chelmsford College (www.chelmsford.ac.uk/pages/courses/parttime.asp or...

    Alterations involving buried metal conduit

Thanks for your comments Tony. I knew knew this would not be a straightforward job and it's good to hear from others who have tried this before. Light switches have round boxes behind, with the 2 imperial screw holes in a diagonal line. The modern square switches have been fitted using shallow...

    Alterations involving buried metal conduit

Thanks for your advice. That's a good point about the conduit possibly being buried in the floor above. One of the sockets they want changed from single to double has conduit bolted into the top AND the rear. I was already thinking that it would be best to add the new back box alongside...

    Alterations involving buried metal conduit

The property in question is an ex-council flat with brick walls and concrete floor and ceiling. Most wiring is buried in steel conduit. The conduit is in good condition and it's been rewired in singles including a CPC. All in all, the wiring is pretty good. The householders would like a lot of...

    Got a little Project

Suggestions: Bolt a length of timber (eg 4x2) to floor, positioned for her rear wheels to stop against. Make a mark on inside of driver's door and another on garage wall. She can stop when they are aligned.

In need of a fault finding wizard

If there is still a voltage present when the circuit is switched off at the MCB then perhaps the MCB is faulty. A link between this circuit and another should show on IR tests between circuits. Alternatively, switch off every circuit except this and look for a voltage on another circuit.

    mr

Ha ha, I've not seen that one before, though I have seen this. And it's still available from some second hand bookshops. P.S. Sorry jaime for staying off topic, but the first 3 replies should have answered your question.

Wilex split load dual RCD CU

I was going to suggest you look for a CU of the appropriate size but containing only a main switch, but I realised this would not have the appropriate neutral bars. You probably can get an empty casing from Wylex, but it could be a special order from a wholesaler. Does it need to be Wylex...

Effect of ZS and RCD trip Times...!

On a course I was told that regularly operating / testing an RCD will gradually lower the tripping current. At the training centre, the RCDs on the test boards were tested so many times a week that they had to be replaced every few months. Perhaps your RCBO is just getting old and needs...

Tower make pin plugs amongst other fixings. B&Q sell them. Small yellow rawplugs can also work.

Is this acceptable....? (got my doubts)

The ESC says: (17th Edition Guidance | New or Rewired Domestic and Similar Installations) Obviously it is more serious if they are supplied by 2 separate CUs as there is not even a 'single point of isolation' from using a CU main switch. Warning labels on both CUs would help.

    Periodic Inspection Query

Although it is a three phase supply to the block, I presume that only one phase is used for the supply to your customer's flat through a single phase meter. In this case I would put single phase, 2 wire on the cert. I would only record it as 3 phase it the customer is actually provided with a 3...

Places selling linklights usually sell other lengths of lead for using with them. Leads are not always interchangable between different makes.

    Push in mcb

Just been looking at the new Electricfix catalogue and lots of things have shot up in price. The Wylex push in MCBs are now £8.73 incl VAT, a 34% price rise. Ordinary Wylex breakers have gone up by 44%.

Anyone had a phonecall from BT?

I get regular phone calls from them. It's some company that was taken over by BT. Including set up fees and VAT, the first year is about £800. They can't understand why I'm not anxious to start paying them. After about 20 minutes of me trying to get a word in edgeways, they can start to get...

cooker and induction hob urgent help URGENT ASAP

The 6mm cable should be OK protected by a B32 breaker. Just point out to her that if the hob & oven are both on full at the same time then it could trip the breaker. Perhaps even put this in writing at the end of the job, adding that the choice of cable was agreed with her before she chose the...

    V-phase

    GrannySmiff, using your example a kettle is rated at 2200 W at 230 V rearranging P=IxV gives I=P/V I = 2200/230 = 9.57 Amps so, at 230V, the kettle draws 9.57A To find the resistance of the kettle, use R= V/I = 230/9.57 = 24.03 Ohms If the voltage is reduced to 220V, I = V/R = 220/24.03 =...
