Campaign for licensing!

The Tory's scrapped the HIPS packs after the Labour Government set it up.

Thousands of people spent thousands of pounds doing the course what for ? Nothing in the end.

Labour also advocated the part p scheme and hopefully the Tory's will see through it as a pile of rubbish and scrap it.

That was another mess, keeping the EPC but not seeing the job through with a compulsory PIR!

So your electrical installation can be in a dangerous condition but at least you know you've got 270mm of loft insulation!!

I see your point IQ, and agree. But presently, that would mean that a Qualified Electrician, say working in the industrial side of our industry, or even say myself a C Eng would be shown the door!!!! Meaning, were not qualified because were not paying a scam provider to use their logo. And this is where it's all wrong. These providers have got the industry (and everyone else) believing that your only qualified if your paying a fee to there company.
From what i can understand, all these providers have there own fair share of cowboys, that there actually protecting, instead of ostracizing... So at this moment in time, this practice of refusing sales purely based on not being with a scam provider sucks, to my mind...

Only up to this point in the thread so don't know if the above has been answered already.

I'm not a member of a scheme but i can buy from electrifix as i took copies of my qualifications in for them to photocopy and send off to headoffice. Like IQ i have been impressed with the way they have turned down sales, because the buyers couldn't prove they were qualified.

Don't know if this has slipped under people's radar but part P is currently being reviewed. The focus of it is

to evaluate the contribution Part P (Electrical safety – dwellings) has made since the requirements were introduced in 2005 and consider ways of reducing the costs of compliance

taken from http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/planningandbuilding/pdf/1800841.pdf pages 16 and 17 of the pdf make interesting reading. Couldn't see anywhere where it said their findings/ recommendations will be published.

Edit :I certainly let them know my views on the cost of compliance

NICEIC Approved Contractors would took 99% of the PIR'S, so who knows, maybe other scheme providers did not really push for it ?

TBH if i was a member of the public and i wanted a good inspection carried out i would go with the "National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers"... NAPIT

Hope the Inspector who came to see me in 2009 does not carry out PIR'S, he could only qualify for a JIB Improvers card lol

every one talks about having licensing scheme in theory good idea, but the root cause is b&q ,homebase ,wickes they sell electrical products to any one and every one with out questioning there electrical compentcy, these places should stop selling electrical stuff to people unless they are electrically qualified ie in possesion of a jib card,

I know plenty of lads who have 2330 & NVQ Lvl 3 who couldn't test a paper bag.
Whereas at the same time, I know plenty of lads with experience, 2391-10, 17th etc, who can.

I know I'd rather have someone with 2391-10 than an NVQ and no 2391 to do my testing.

This is , if you don't mind me saying, tommyrot.

The root cause of poor standards in the industry is the desire for the cheapest quote, combined with impunity for unregistered electricians.

If the public won't insist on registered electricians, be they JIB, ECA, Part P, whatever..... then poor standards will remain, and electricians who charge to do the job properly, and test their work afterwards will still lose out to a muppet who'll throw the cables in and walk away.

I think Rocker's got this spot on. Part P needs to be enforced. Then the public will be too scared of the repercussions to employ a non registered spark.

Combine that with a portfolio of 50 jobs before you can register, and you've got a functioning registration scheme.

Part P needs to be enforced

When each and every person sheltering under it as a QS or working under a QS is actually Qualified to the minimum standards of say a "JIB Approved Electrician". Then it may be worth enforcing, but until then it is just an embarassment to say the least.

I can't see how an NVQ and apprenticeship makes every JIB gold card holder a sure fire, no corner cutting, properly certificating, domestic/commercial electrician.

I still stand by my comment (in fact Rocker's point) that Part P, properly enforced, with a slightly more stringent application process would make for a realistic, functional scheme.

Holding a gold card does not in and of itself guarantee high standards.

the industry should have been regulated years ago but the jib, unions, eca, etc did sweet FA to lobby parliment, some person who goes on two day course or what ever it takes to get a part p tells me with 30 years experince, served 5 year indetured apprenticeship tells me what to do dont think so, ps i dont do domestic jobs.
