I'm glad I'm on my way out and not on my way in. I feel sorry for anyone starting on the road now, I'ts all driven by racketeering and conniving schemers to get your hard earned money even before you have a chance to earn it.

I agree with the above post.

Just when you think you are getting ahead they go and move the goal posts.
The whole thing is based on a system to extract as much money from the poor working man as possible.

I mean you have one bloke working and about ten layers of bureaucracy feeding off him like a group of hungry vultures, at least that's the way I see it.

The teaching standards of the courses leave a lot to be desired.
The 2391 course I did was absolute shyte, it cost me ÂŁ800 and I ended up teaching myself by doing past papers and chatting to people on this site.

All the more reason to take the 2391, then.

How do you expect agencies/prospective employers to believe you are 'competent to test' without anything to back it up.
The 2391 proves competence, that's why it's so difficult to pass.

How do you measure your 'competence to test', by the way?

Out of 15 or 16 experienced electricians who took the 2391 with me, all of them thought they were competent to test.

They got a big shock when only 7 of us passed.

IMHO the only people who will be glad to say goodbye to the 2391 are the ones who couldn't pass it.

Hi mate as did the 6 out of the 10 who didnt pass it on the course i did
I was the only one not working in the industry and every week watched them and listened to them turning up and saying they hadnt even looked at GN3 at home but still expected to pass after only 3 hrs 1 evening a week for 8 weeks

when i first started it to ensure i passed i studied no stop every day for over 4 months upto and ver 12 hrs a day
thats how much it meant to me to pass

Put the effort in and you will pass otherwise save your money and time

I did similar - spent the whole of the summer doing my own research, started the course in the September and took the exam first week in December.

As you say - you've got to put the hours in.....and it's worth it for the 'understanding' that you end up with, let alone the certificate.

Few points to make here lads, 1. Are you sure these guys were actually electricians? how can you know for sure?
2. You may not realize that there is an understanding between a lot of electricians to fail on purpose, any course their company puts them on because the companies won't pay "responsibility monies" for extra qualifications gained! but expect the men to take on these extra responsibilities no probs.!
3.And last but not least, I've lost count of the amount of times I've pointed out that this is all just a big money making racket by training firms and if you had the luxury of a proper apprenticeship, you wouldn't/shouldn't be having to do these bl%%y courses!!!

Hi wayneL

yes i think if i had just left it to the start of the course it would have been a whole lot harder

Hi madmac
as for if they were electricians who nows but they where working as electricians and being paid as one lol and i wasnt yes i can see you may be right for the reason they put no effort in as they wernt paying thereselves unlike I and if there employers wont pay for extra responsibilities

when i was a JIB apprentice electrician and was under the construction industry board (CITB)
i was in the union etc and the system seemed better than it is now whereas now its a shambles

but if i could have got a apprenticeship as a adult then i would have mate but i begged for help with training ,funding or help to find a course or work but to no avail in hte end had to settle for privatly paid for courses as the jokecentre did not care to tell me to approach colleges as funding was available

mate i would still do a apprenticeship if someone would take me on lol but at 41 i doubt it very much and would pay my own fees as i already have and are doing
I blame myself as i gave up my original apprenticeship in 1986 as i didnt feel i was learning enough

does anyone know a centre in the north west that does the 2391-20 design course

What an absolute shambles. So what is going to replace the 2330 ?? How can you get any simpler than multi choice tick a box exams?

Getting rid of the 2391 is a disgrace. As Lenny so rightly said it sets the benchmark in the industry and splitting it up isnt going to improve the training of future sparks its just a way of getting the pass mark of the 2391 to look more favourable. In other words they are just making it easier. We already have "Domestic Installers" out in their vans trading as Electricians when they are not. I am sorry but 12 weeks training does not make you an Electrician. That takes years.

IMHO the only people who will be glad to say goodbye to the 2391 are the ones who couldn't pass it.

Spot on Wayne L.

I had to do the course. I paid up spent the hours in the classroom, on the theory, spent hours on the practical. Sat the killer exam for two and a half hours. Got the news i'd passed. Great! so why shouldnt everyone have to do it? Why should it be made easier to accomodate those who cant pass existing qualification to prove competence in inspection and testing?

The reasons are clear for watering down courses, it's to get bums on seats and coin it in and then agencies can have an army of willing albeit desperate guys that will work for any rates and cut H&S corners to get job done quicker and make more profit for scum mobs!!! BTW, the Jobcenterplus and REC have committed to working with each other with an agreement by using the Joke center to plug agency jobs on their official Govt. website!!!
I mean, what chance do we have when the official Govt. body for finding gainful employment has jumped into bed with the Devil himself e.g. the agency regulator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look it up boys, I can't remember link but it wasn't too hard to find and I just stumbled on it because I was investigating where the Joke center gets it's job adverts from.:thinking2:

There is an electrical diploma coming out next September I think the idea is that they are trying to short circuit the 12 weeks and in route- I hope this is the case!

I must say I'm amazed that the 2391 name is going, it is such a well-known sign of reaching a certain standard in our industry and from an employers point of view, apart from that NAPIT NA2391 there was no confusion.

Now, employers will be looking at CV's with 2391-10, 2391-20, 2392, 2394, 2395 and 2396-what a joke and what a way to devalue the hard work that many of us put in to get that all-important 2391.
