I have very nearly completed a rewire of a two bed-roomed bungalow, as this was a friend of mine I charged ÂŁ1400 all in, not a bad price as it took two of us a week (I have been paid already). since I have not been there for the last week the plumber has told the lady that he has spoken to his electrician and I have broken every rule in the regs and has threaten to get an inspector in unless I give ÂŁ500 cash back tomorrow.
Candie is in the middle so unsure if to believe the plumber or me.
the thing i have done wrong are.
not taken fly leads to the back boxes,
the boxes have not got grommets, this is something I always do but I did not have any on the first fix I was going to do it on second fix but my mate connected the sockets up I totally forgot about it (but is that against the regs?).
there are a few cables close to the surface all in the correct zones I have bonded/ undercoated with plaster, when the finished cote is applied they cables will be fully concealed.
and that is the minimum distance for a socket from a tap.
please be honest with your answers as I will print this off tonight and will be going around tomorrow with it tomorrow.
I have offered to correct the problems (for nothing) but have been told by the plumber that his electrician will do it and finish the work and testing for ÂŁ500. and he doesnt want me in the house again just the money and the key.
please give your views asap, and what could happen if a inspector did come around to see the problems if I cant cant sort them I am currently with elesca.

thanks and sorry for the long post :)

can u tell me where i can find in writing/regs where it says 300mm to edge of sink as i got somebody who says it dont matter on rcd thanks
It's in the Electrician's guide to the building regs, p60, 5.2.2
"Accessories should be installed a minimum of 300mm from the edge of kitchen sinks and draining boards to reduce the risk of being splashed."

at the end of the day I want to finish the job to a good standard, i will fit grommets and fly leads. the job is for a friend of mine. if the plumber had not said the thing he had the would have been all passed and finished now. I've learnt a few thing's from the job. keep plenty of grommets of the van and a little knowledge can cause many problems.

As if our jobs not hard enough without pr!!!s like this plumber, who's paying for this " inspection " the plumber or this Candie?
Agree with all the above, don't get bullied its your install.
The grommet thing is under reg 522.8.11 enclosures shall not have sharp edges....
If he pulls you on them just say look i was out of grommets mate so i filed the burrs off, no problem.;)

lee, see what the "inspector says" and let us all know,Iim am in Nottingham so not far if **** hits fan and you need someone to reassure your customer for you.

Tell him to stick his inspector the only inspector you will accept is building control of the local council that can look at everyones work including his!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris

in a situation like this would scheme providers not be able to send an assessor to ensure/stress to this ***** that your work and competance is perfectly fine???

and also i read this

Bad practice is to connect cpc to back box and then fly lead to the face plate.

never realised this before and was just wondering why??

thanks guys, and dont worry about that to$$er :D

wouldnt class that as bad practice if connections are good :p

think the lesson to be learnt here is make sure you carry plenty of grommets as fitting them at the outset is a lot less hassle than trying to squeeze them into an already fitted box ;)

Well I'm glad I never retrained as a Plumber...

As a still Training Sparks Mate, I may not know it all (like the plumber) but certainly agree with the posts provided in relation to fly leads, capping etc...

As you've said, going round putting in grommets is a no quibble, easy fix.
Fly leads & Capping are just considered best practice I've learnt. Not too much extra work & even though the capping is getting boarded or plastered, I do it as it looks neater, provides a minimal amount of protection from clumsiness and more professional once the other trades follow you in.

Think Building Regs for electricians mentions 300mm rule, but certainly not a 'REG' just common sense I'd say. As for the plasterer working live or not, surely under EAWR 1989 anybody whom interferes with live accessories are deemed responsible for their own actions. (Be it Plasterers, Decorators etc) So it is up to him to ensure the installation is safely isolated prior to working near it? Has no plastering been carried out prior to 2nd fix?

Call his bluff mate...get the inspector in, let him do his worst!

It may be a good idea to get pictures of your work too as he may try messing with it as youve rumbled his scam. Good on ya mate. P8icks like that need a hiding. Or a spoonful of sugar in his petrol tank ... :D

I spoke to Candie earlier on, she doesn't know about any inspector so I think it may be his mate ? (she doesn't want the council involved she need to move in asap without these problems), last time i spoke to the plumber he said it was someone from the council coming around and anything wrote down on his list I would have to be rectified by myself I agreed. there is one issue I haven't connected the water or gas bonding, the last day on the job the water was just a tap ready forAndyAndy to take it to the boiler, and the gas was lead, Andy was in the
processd at the mains) I know this will cause me a massive problem if it is an
official council inspector. I am only 24 been an electrician since I left school I love the trade and I have enjoyed working self employed, since the company I worked for went bust. untill now nothing like this has made me feel like throwining in all away and working sombody else . you will have to wait until tomorrow night after the so called inspector has been around :)

process of changing it to copper that day. he said he would bond it so I left the clamps.(the 10mm in place connected at the mains) I know this will cause me a massive problem if it is a

Couple of points. I doubt very much that the council will send round an inspector on the say so of a "Walter Mitty" plumber. I deal with LABC inspectors on a regular basis and in every case there is always communication between myself and the council prior to visits. If (big if) an LABC inspector was coming, then they would want to meet you in person to discuss any issues, and would contact you to arrange a mutually convenient time to meet.
Secondly your common or garden BCO normally has next to no knowledge of the electrical regs that is why they leave policing of Part P to the scam providers. They employ outside contractors to oversee electrical works being notified under the LABC route. LABC will not be paying a contractor to come and inspect your work if they have not received payment up front from the householder or person carrying out the work. Even if they did, who will they invoice for this supposed ÂŁ500 when it turns out there was no reason for them to inspect anyway!
This plumber is talking out of his bottom hole.

Don't worry, the guy is a ****. I feel sorry for your friend that he is doing her a favour!!! It must be stressing her out while making you feel pretty ***** too. The only option is 63mm hole saw to his thigh. lol. only joking!

Sounds like a lot of bs from him, straighten out the few bits you left out. Def the bonding! asap then forget about him. 2nd fix, test, learn from it then move on. Good luck. ps dont forget to clean hole saw and arbour.
