Went to a job today, twin and earth, and it had been wired 2 plate, which of course meant that all the switches had the neutral taken to them.

WTF, if I had done that in my apprenticeship I would have been kicked off site.

Is this how things are done now, god I hope not.

The hotel I work sorry live at wanted hotel key cards........

They need a neutral to operate..... no neutral so...... no key card switch

OK it's not domestic.... but I did have a good laugh to myself today when I realised they weren't gonna work because of the lack of a neutral!!

the install requires it, so not a problem, and you have a terminal on the accessory to put the neutral :)

Here is a picture of where the electrician wired to the down lights, and only had L/SW at the switches.

Now I'd call that 'bad practice' !!:o

I can show pictures of lights wired badly or switches wired badly. Does not mean either method is bad practice if done correctly. Its all down to the design and the ability of the installer to do it correctly. Blindy saying a certain method is bad practice is just idiotic.

I have been looping to the switch for quite a few years now. Make installing wall lights etc. easier, and adds the bonus of i cable at lighting point.

I have also seen switches wired badly. I would prefer to sort out the mess in a switch than sort out that bloody mess at the ceiling, and hiding the joint box in the ceiling void.

Sorry I didn't mean to be blind in stating this type of wiring method is bad, as I totally agree with you in regard to being down to the installer. I have myself used both methods and have even wired using the spider method too.
It's all down to what fits the job in hand
