What wire to use when spurring a circuit onto additional sockets?

I am wishing to extend and install some new sockets close to an existing socket in a room, I am a complete newbie when it comes to electrics although sensible and aware of the dangers, I want to install some additional power sockets in my living room but unsure what wire i need to use.

I am aware that this is an easy question but i dont know the answer so appreciate the help and if a few people could answer to confirm its right.

Once i know ill order some on ebay.

Many Thanks!!

I fully agree. You can't smell it, often you can't hear it and it will kill you. It should be treated with respect. The problem is as far as I can see it it that you guys have made it out to be far more dangerous in every day life than it actually is.

What is more dangerous?:

The OP buying a load of 4 way extension leads and running them all around his house?

or

The OP asking advice from what he perceives as a reputable forum of professionals, on the correct way to perform a simple wiring task that is no more difficult than wiring a plug?

The guy needs a few extra sockets and one way or another he is going to get them.

Don't diss electricity, it can be almost as dangerous as a room with a draught which blows in slightly the wrong direction because the "engineer" has got the angle of dangle wrong on his air vents.

I seem to remember there was an article about 'installing' air conditioning in professional electrician magazine recently - these new systems are a piece of cake to install and a lucrative way that electricians and installers can diversify. You don't need a degree in astrophysics to blow air around a room.

You are correct, but you will soon need a C&G2079.
That article was the best thing that happened to our trade last year. We had no end of calls from electricians and plumbers who has **** themselves and lost the gas. Every other spark in the wholesalers had frost bitten fingers. :D

Still no response to paul.m or myself. Seems you have no real argument only the childish one with novosparks. Also swearing even using a number in the middle is not permitted on the forum.

Typical joe public response i'm afraid. There are a dozen or more factors to consider before putting "just an extra socket" in someones home. In some ways extension leads are preferable... At least they'll be protected by 13amp fuses.

Your job/profession really is not as complicated as you lot think it is. A basic grasp of "O Level" physics is all it amounts to. Where is the speciality?

Steve

the speciality of the electrical trade lies in doing a job and doing it properly. my eldest daughter had a very good grasp of electrons and their flow at 12 years old and also how to wire up a circuit and do the cable calcs.
now that is not to say she would be able to design an installation and furthermore test it, or install it.
the compliance with bs7671 and the electricity at work regulations would also need to be factored into an installation of which a grasp of the o level or gcse would not really cover.

the inspection and testing of an installation whether it is domestic commercial or industrial takes many years in the trade to accomplish.
it is not just as simple as putting the wires in and if it works it`s fine, although many an amateur has told me the wiring must be ok as it has worked fine for years.

Sorry, I have read the thread again. What is the question that yourself and Paul.M seek an answer?

You have missed over the point that it is not as simple to give the op advice on how to do this job as you first said it was. You said that electrical work was easy and we proved it was not. You have not proven your statement that it is easy or admitted you are wrong.

NovusSparkus.

You post are becoming very random and bizzare. Am I correct in thinking you have been drinking?

Steve
No, they started "random and bizzare" (or even 'bizarre').
I had assumed you were jesting with your first post on this thread, and it all seems to have snowballed from there - some of your posts have quite frankly been downright obnoxious.
