    smoke alarms 17th contradiction

Agree with Des. In domestic work, I feed the smokes from the ground floor lighting circuit via a keyswitch near the CU for isolation. Why this gets asked so many times beats me, seems simple!! Steve.

calv, When I had my van MOT'd the other day, it passed but I had a couple of advisories. Surely this is what the pir is, an electrical MOT. It would be nice for us that, when the regs change, the phone rings off the hook with people wanting to upgrade :) But we all know this does not happen...

So, if the original installation met the regs at the time it was put in, it must have been safe. So why is it now unsafe?? Look at it this way. There are a lot of vintage cars on the road, they do not meet current regulations, but they are not scrapped, are they? No. So, if the installation does...

NICEIC Certification Scheme maximum load on niceic installation certs

Pete, The good old nic would have you go around the place, switch everything on and measure the current. Great. 1 hour later, when it gets cold, out comes the 2.5kw heater. Now what has happened to the max load? Use the old rule of thumb, 100a main fuse, 80a max load, 80a fuse, 60a max, 60a...

    Testing-Installation & periodic certificates

Confused as to why different circuits need a different code! If the install conformed to 16th, then its a code 4, simples. Steve.

Nick, I assume that the conduit is SUITABLE to be an earth, that the connections to the conduit are SOUND AND that they are visible AND give the correct readings for an earth then put steel. If not, you need to run a seperate conductor. Same with the swa, is it terminated correctly at BOTH...

Hi Nick, If I read you correctly, it would be the earth that is protecting the individual DB. Steve.

    Testing 480v system

Yep, standard 2 phase 3 wire install and common on farms agri etc. As others have said, treat as 3 phase unless both phases are being used, ie 2DB's, then as 2 seperates. Steve.
